Hell that's a tough call, for the bigger game and longer ranges I like the 300 Win Mag. Smaller deer and the pest animals a 243 , but we can only choose one so it would be the Win mag.

True but rabbit pie ain't my favorite. Most calibers can work as a one for all rifle at a pinch, i would rather be over gunned on small game than under gunned on the bigger stuff or the distant ones. Lucky we aren't limited to just one.

    .308 Winchester

Hands down the most versatile cartridge ever devised. You can shoot subsonic, downloaded slow and heavy, superfast varmint, regular hunting rounds, hot and heavy... Everything from undamaged subsonic rabbits to the heaviest stag.

What’s not to like? And, it’s damn cheap to run.

For NZ the 308 as the best all rounder, ammo availability etc but my favourite cartridge is the mighty 7x57 of which my personal custom rifle will be chambered in.

Only one Rifle - Hardy Hybrid with 6.5CM or PRC, and 300PRC barrels - maybe a 223 barrel for cheap shooting.

If that's cheating and you really only want one caliber I'll stick with my 6.5 creedmoor - projectiles between 90g and 160g will take any game in NZ, accurate, good factory ammo readily available if for some reason i'm caught out.

308 for the north island and 270 for the south
if things get any rougher import wise that might be about all we can get ammo wise
mostly because all the cool kids have 6.5s these days

It would have to be something 30 calibre but not on extreme ends of speed spectrum so for me it's a toss-up between 30-06 and 308. There isn't a lot you can not accomplish hunting-wise with either of those. Affordability and availability of ammunition would probably give the 308 the nod ahead of the 30-06 but, having owned a 30-06 as my first hunting rifle, sentiment would have me pick that calibre.

I would probably now go for an o/u combination gun, top barrel in 7x57 and bottom in 20ga, express sights and a 2-8x32 in qd rings.

    Would sort NZ hunting nicely
