In all honesty roktoy it does surprisingly little damage. Probably because the animals I've shot with it haven't really been at ranges that justify such a rifle if I am honest. I have yet to recover a bullet as they tend to keep going through the animal , the tree it was standing in front of , the tree behind that one etc etc...

Is it a rifle if it's a subcal adapter?

I'd go 12 gauge single shot with a variety of rifled subcal adapters from 22lr to 45-70, whatever common cals the action could take (30-30, 9mm, 357, 44 mag, 45acp, 45lc). Have been very impressed at the accuracy of 12 inch adapters.

However, I think you meant a true rifle. In that case, probably 308 on account of its common components, and ability to subcal adapt a few .30 cal pistol cartridges, or just download to a lead round ball and fluff load for rabbits.

In a G2 then 223 on account of the ability to adapt the firing pin to shoot subcal 22lr.

I hope its "one centerfires" and not "one rifle" but if truely only one then I would have to go with .223 built light and short, if I'm also allowed a rimfire I would go with 6.5credmore.

I like hunting calibers that I can get on the shelf at most shops these days, a few years back I would have said .308 rather than 6.5cred due to this

If you're allowed a rimfire too then up the centrefire to 6.5.

7.62x39 every time. Ammo's plentyfull & cheap, has good punch & accuracy out to 200yds even on reds, low recoil, & in mini action, very light to carry. has kept us in meat for years.
6.5 Grendel would be next.

Well, I’m now down to MY one and only rifle.

A 6x45 in a classic old BSA action. Will do everything I need it to within sensible range limits.

I had to say ‘MY one and only’ because I’ve got a .222 hiding in the safe for my wee girl if/when she takes it up. Another BSA that can just happily wait there for her.

Got to be my short barrel 6.5 creedmoor for me. Certainly the first rifle I go to in the safe every hunting trip.
