Cool If you had $800-$1000 burning a hole.......

    So as the title suggests,

If you had $800-$1000 hidden from the missus in the sock drawer fund, and wanted a nice .308 or similar, what would your choice be?

I'm struggling to take the plunge into something at that price range, or just keep adding to the sock drawer for another few months.

    Cheers lads.

I would buy a used Tikka in Cal of your choice but I would go 6.5 of some kind or 7mm08.

Personally I'd keep saving for what you really want to shoot.

The Howas are well worth a Hoon but you may or may not hate the Hogue stock (I do, immensely).

In saying that, the cheap Browning AB3 I brought for my Wife and kids to shoot (.243) is now probably my favourite rifle to carry and use.

Or look for a good 2nd hand rifle as suggested.

    You've answered the question yourself!

If your not happy splashing out on something in that price range and from your post your saving and squirrelling it away... keep squirrelling it away for a few more months.

I'd be tempted to take a gander at a Mossberg Patriot.

If you're hiding your $ in a sock drawer, where's she hiding hers?

To be honest they all tend to shoot much the same. Go lean over the counter at your local and get them to let you have a play with whatever they have. Shoulder them, work the actions, check the ergonomics, ... Remember which one it was you were reluctant to hand back because it felt good and buy one second hand.

Sock drawer doesn't sound very secure. Need to think where the Mrs NEVER accesses.

Gadget speaks sense (as usual), see what fits you and what you like the feel of.

I haven't tried all the options but have used a few and handled others, I would (and did) go for a Savage in that price range myself.

Save up for a Kimber Montana 708 and never look back.
I had to layby mine but its the rifle I will keep when they tell us we can only have one.

I picked up my sako A7 270wsm for only $100 more including ammo and reloading dies.
You would need to squirrel some more to buy a decent scope.
In reality you could by any of the below listed (but not limited to) for not much more or even at $1000.
    All would be good choices
    Browning xbolt
    Browning a bolt
    Tkka t3
    Sako a7
    Ruger American
    Or remington 700
All have there pros and cons and all can be made to shoot well.
But as others have illuded to feel is important and caliber is your call.
    But good starters
    308
    270
    7mm08
260....i could go on but you get the idea

    Good luck
