Inherited these

Received a very welcome phone call the other day from the old boy (Granddad).

His firearms license came up for renewal and he decided not to renew....which in turn, being the favourite grandson ;), means I have the privilege of inheriting his 1960s Baikal Under-over 12g and Winchester .22 (model 67 I believe)

I have been "borrowing" the .22 for a while and even though it's a single shot, it has a fairly long barrel and is the most accurate and effective .22 I've ever fired. Even with a shitty 4x32 scope I regularly drop bunnies with ease out to 150+. It would have been responsible for reducing the rabbit population in Canterbury by about 250 in the last 6 months.

In all seriousness though I feel extremely privileged to receive these and getting the firearms from the man who taught me how to shoot holds great significance for me. Not that you're computer literate enough to read this but thanks old boy, means the world - they're in good hands.

Jord, those Baikals have very tight chokes and might need re-choking if you are going to use steel. Or maybe Granddad has already had it done?
It would be a real shame to ruin such a sentimental piece.

Yeah the top barrel is half - will steel shot wreck that barrel? Have only fired #7 lead clay target ammo through it so far and am happy to use it only for that as have another shotty for thrashing - cheers for that Tahr.

There’s some sort of formula that you use to work out how much you have to increase the chokes for steel. Someone on here will know the detail. But if you stick to lead (which you can use away from water), you will be good to go.

And none of mine want my collection! Oldest I have is a single shot Hollis 12g of my great grandfathers and a single shot Remmington Targetmaster, bought new by my dad just after the war? Both shitters but keepers:cool:

The Baikels had chrome bores I think and full choke was as tight as the snappers, opening them up I think stuffs the chrome, I had one back in the 80s used it for possums, spot in one hand Baikel in the other.

Ok - will take it into shop next time I go but happy just shooting lead and clays for now.

Lead half choke or modified is full choke for steel but get it checked by a good gunsmith to be sure

have a shooting cobber who bought a 12g baikal O/U for his son -if my memories correct gunsmith opened both barrels to 1/2choke (modified). After he gave it a cosmetic makeover its a lovely wee gun to use.Ive used it a couple of times and its great.
my 2nd gun is a Bently Pointer(early jap copy of the famous A5 Browning.)
Shes 1/2 choke fixed and due to age is limited to 2 3/4 steel. No1 gun escort is the feed it anything buts its diet is anything that is legal & flies with a lucky pig&unlucky hares thrown in.
both 12g did have probs with trap ammo but i solved this due to the advice of a waihora gunclub bloke and one Barry Foster. Hull trap ammo is just the bees knees for these two.

You have a escort and it hasn't failed yet? ahaha just kidding a friends one is going strong a few years later
