I finally took the Krag out..got it zeroed at 100m and shot an inch group...super stoked...will take it hunting and keep you all posted....if anyone see's any of that Hornady factory ammo for sale please let me know...Cheers !
I did eventually finish my dream 30-40 Krag rifle build but forgot to drop it in to this thread.
Winchester 1885 High Wall action circa 1890
Musket butt stock
Factory custom fore end
New Vulcan 1:10" 30 cal barrel. Parralel octagonal to tapered round.
I started with a Leupold M8 3x but the rifle proved very accurate and I ended up putting a VX3i 1.5-5 CD ZL scope on it because it will be a 400m capable classic rifle

I still have the mint bore Parker Hale 30-40 rifle too sell it anyone want a really nice practical classic bolt action Krag too shoot.
Brass is easy to make from 303
Deer lord, give me the strength to avoid these temptations.
That's a nice build @akaroa1. I always look forward to your project photos.
And so my credit card trembles.
The 30-40 is a great cartridge for the handloader
Brass can be made from 303
It has a nice long neck and conventional shoulder
Great case capacity gets you in to mild 308 velocities at the lower pressures required for vintage rifles.
30-40 was originally barreled 1:10" so will stabilise everything from light to heavy projectiles
It is essentially identical to the 303 Brit but has a better range of bullets available
I still want an 1885 303 though !
LOL ...... I could have. Just finished a 25/303 refurbishment.
Archie Moore had a 30/40 krag built by Din Collins ages ago. If memory recalls he had very good result in some obscure range event.
I used Din's 30-40 chamber reamer for my build.
It was a very well used chamber reamer and had obviously cut a lot of chambers and been sharpened a few times because it cut a way under sized outer shoulder and neck.
And it was not a great looking chamber straight off the tool.
But a number of hours honing and polishing the chamber to fit fired brass from my other 30-40 sized through my dies and I have a very nice chamber sized exactly to my dies.
So my precious genuine head stamped 30-40 brass will only be lightly worked during re sizing
And this is maybe contributing to the accuracy.
But I will give most of the credit to the Vulcan barrel
