Thread: Left Handed

Seems being left handed makes me somewhat of an outcast when it comes to buying an entry level firearm. My dilemma is do I buy a 2nd hand l/h rifle or can I get away with a new one that is r/h. Budget only goes as far as a howa or a marlin. Would appreciate some advice. looking at a .308

Buy a lever action or a semi auto...or r/h, and go for one-shot-kills

Muzz welcome to the forum. Don't be deterred as the lefty rifles are out there, just not that many of them. I know of one left hand shooter who has only ever used right hand rifles and is as quick at getting a second shot off (if needed) as the next man. In fact I reckon if you gave him a left hand rifle he would probably be slower with it. If the comfort of a left hand action is what you want then do not compromise.

As an after thought PM Barefoot, he has a rifle in .243 that he told me he was going to sell and although I may be wrong, I think that is a lefty. Tell him Rushy said he is due a commission if you buy it. ha ha ha ha

Muzz, welcome. I am a lefty. Depends what type of shooting you're going to be doing.

Prone only, right hand bolt is actually faster for lefties, coz you keep your left hand on the grip. For bush hunting, or something like NZDA comps where you need quick follow-up shots, a left bolt or lever action is worth it. Position of the safety is also an issue, tang safeties like on the older lever actions are obviously faster.

My primary bush hunting rifle is a Baikal single shot, and I have open sights on it, coz where I hunt, 90% of animals are shot well within 100m.

Keep an eye on Trademe, I have a favorite search stored that notifies me of any left hand rifles, if you are patient, you get some awesome deals. Picked up a Remington 788 lefty for $400 earlier this year...

The Savage International package includes a Weaver scope, and they have lefty models, around $1k, very good deal IMHO.

Guilty as charged needed a bit of work on the stock, and re-blueing, very happy customer.

I am very reluctantly selling my package. Savage weather warrior .270, Burris fullfield 2, weaver tactical rings, limbsaver slip on recoil pad, clean ez bore snake, a hunting and fishing gun bag and a box of federal ammo.


This rifle is currently shooting half inch groups at 100 has only had 60 odd rounds through it.

That sucks havn to sell to fix shit, I had to sell me sako 270 a few years back to fix car

I bought one for TimeRider in 243 (another of you weird lefties that shoot well) and it is a nice accurate rifle. Don't dismiss good quality second hand.

Yeah they are really solid rifles IMHO, 6mm yeah it sucks and the worst part is im only fixing that in order to sell it to pay out some other bills so I can afford a 7 seater for the family lol
