Leupold CDS scope Qn about turret.

I'm thinking of replacing a scope I have for a lighter Leupold 3-9×40.CDS Freedom. Current scope is
good and doing the job but these are a good price and abt 90g lighter and marginally better optics.

Rifle is 30.06 mainly used deer hunting in a variety of situations. But mostly in Forrest ambushing. (Sit & wait)

I don't need the CDS option as rare I shoot over 150 yards.
My concern is there is no cover over the turret.

I understand you can zero rifle in normal way, then set the turret to zero. So it could easily be bumped changing the settings, possibly without realising.

    Should I be concerned?

If you don't need it, why not just go for a non-dialling scope or have I missed something?

The one you linked to appear to be discontinued. Great scope, i have one on my 223. All the new freedoms are CDS and this one is at a discounted price. Hence the qn.

Ive got a VX3i with CDS and yes it does turn several clicks whenever I carry it out hunting. Must rub on my clothes or pack or something.

Yep, that was my concern. Searching has found there are a few reporting same issue.

I've decided not to purchase for that very reason.

I believe the zero lock is model specific. But if I'm wrong let me know.

I've got a VX3i with the exposed CDS turret. I've bush based some pretty thick stuff and I think once, it was one or two clicks out in countless trips. Once!

    Not an issue IMO.

Depending on how you like to do things, you could always wrap some insulation tape around it to stop it from spinning.

Given the style of hunting you mention you do mostly, you should have ample time to check the turret hasn't moved while you are waiting.
Make it a habit when you get to your ambush spot.

Umm, I think its fair to say it isn't very likely in my case. But prefer not to take the risk.

Yes I did consider using tape or some such to reduce risk.

However ive found out they make a Freedom huntplex. Slightly different type of duplex and no CDS. If I wait a few weeks I can buy one.

You would think they would just provide a cap for them.

Anyway this is the other scope. Only $60 more.

Nice. I went down the dial up scope route for a bit. It was aspiration more than anything. In reality, 100 metres is a long shot for me, so I was carrying around a heavier scope than needed and had the concern of accidentally rotating the turret. Back to basics now.

Had a Redfield revolution Ta Moa scope with dialable turret, exactly the same family and design at that freedom.
Sold it too a mate, he was shooting a sika in close dropped on the spot.
On closer inspection he realised it was a headshot.
He was aiming front chest. Yes, the exposed dial had turned a few clicks as he pushed
his way through the bush. Needless to say, the scope got on sold.

Some say they are ok. Some say not ok.

I just ordered a leupold 3-9×40 hunt-plex. Paid a bit extra for peace of mind. Should have it some time next week.
