Thread: Leupold review. Vx5hd zero lock 2 turn.

Afternoon all. So first review and my thoughts on the new vx5hd. Most will know that I had a vx6 for sale and was replacing it with a new vx5. Out the box the main tube is similar length if not the same to the vx6, I found eye relief good but on a long action can be limited, noticeably the vx5hd is lighter in weight without lens covers at 550grams. Also with the new lens coatings etc I feel the image appeared sharper and brighter. Zero lock turret on elevation cap has a two turn function and will give you appx 37moa this being more the enough and returns back to zero or lock. You cannot lock the cap at any other settings. You also can't go back past zero. The (clicks) are still not firm but I feel are improved on the vx6. Feild of view and eye relief both great. Over all I consider the vx5hd to be a well priced, dialable scope that should be considered for both novices and advanced hunters looking for a scope within a budget the wife won't kill you over

No lock on windage turret?

@WillB yes I feel it is. @Timmay no locking cap for windage. The vx6hd has but I would think the extra $1k I can't see that I would have any advantage on my hunting rifle for the price

I wonder if they are not an aftermarket option?

It's a completely different style. Eg the top without the cap (look at picture) is new design and the windage is the older type. Like the vx6. Could be wrong though. I would think leupold custom shop could do it

How close does it focus?

I'm just gonna jump in here, as i know a few people keen on getting this scope (vx5hd).
I emailed Leupold last night and they came back with the following,

Good Morning,

The glass, and internal lens coatings are the same. The differences are in other features.

The VX-6HD has a larger zoom ratio, 6:1 (2-12x, 3-18x) as opposed to the 5:1 (2-10x, 3-15x) on the VX-5HD. The VX-6HD includes Alumina Lens Covers, 2ZL Adjustments, Illuminated Reticle options, a Reticle Cant Indicator, and a Cat-tail for the power magnification ring.

The VX-5HD does have a Firedot Reticle, and also a 2ZL adjustment, but these are not standard throughout the entire series.

The vx5hd looks like a nice scope but for me to get everything I want out of a scope a few things I find a missing on the vx5hd or even vx6hd.

So this leads me to my questions,
Can the vx5hd be converted to or getting released in FFP and any chance of just normal TMOA or TMIL reticles? With turret clicks to match?
And, lastly can a vx5hd have the lockable windage turrets like the vx6hd?

Because the VX-5HD, and VX-6HD scopes are premier level hunting scopes, they are not available in a FFP reticle options. I don't foresee us manufacturing them as a FFP, simply because FFP reticles don't work well for hunting purposes in most situations. If you want a FFP, you will have to take a look at either our VX-3i LRP, Mark6, or Mark8 scopes.

Yes, the VX-5HD HD is available with the Zero Lock adjustment, on certain models. <--- the question may have been misunderstood

How does the field of view and eyebox compare to the VX6?
I love the massive FOV on the VX6 and find the scope so easy to look through, with no tunnel vision, I wouldn't want to give that up.

Regarding the turrets, are they just not super positive clicks?
Is it still easy to make individual clicks and feel confident that you have dialed what you wanted.
There is a difference between not the best audible/tactile clicks and down right mushy "clicks".

@Beetroot eye box/ feild of view very very good I would say better then the vx6 but then again being x15 power maybe it's just faster to line up? Yes the clicks are positive and you know and feel every click, but it's no nightforce when it clicks with authority
