    Leupold VX3

Looking at purchasing a new scope for a my 308, 2 options being a 3.5-10x40cds or a 4.5-14x40cds vx3, question to any one with the 4.5-14x40 model, is the 4.5 power still useable for bush hunting, have always used a 3-9x40 and like the 3 power for up close stuff which is why I am also looking at the 3.5-10x40 model, but still want to be able to wind it up for the occasional longer shot, also any suggestions on what retailers have the best prices for the above scopes, Cheers

I reckon the 4.5 is a just little too much for me ... Have both and use the 3.5 for bush ... 4.5 is now on REM Mag

I've had both. 4.5-14 only lasted 6months before I got a 3-9 & 2-7. Good scopes but both smaller options suite me better.

As Danny says, 2-7 or 3-9. Also, look at the 2.5-8 Leupold.

Ive had the 3.5 - 10 and currently use the 4.5 - 14 both in the vx3 cds. I prefer the 3.5 - 10 because the FOV with the 4.5-14 is not the best with the 40mm objective. You have to to have your eye in the perfect spot for no parralax issues. Both dialed accurately to the distance i was shooting to - 500yds max and returned zero. Great light weight scopes.

I vote the 3.5-10 Leupold. I have a 3.5-10X50 and its awesome, I consider 3.5x to be low enough for close up and 10x can definitely zoom far enough for long shots. If you want to purchase brand new, I think the cheapest way in NZ is through the place in Nelson.. Someone please help with the name

Try Reloaders Supplies in Onehunga. Always good on Leupold prices; just ask for a quote. They can usually supply within a day if not in stock.

    I have the VX3 4.5-14x40 CDS.
Only time I found it too much was when I walked around a bush and had a sika hind 4 metres from me.
When I raised the scope, all I could see was brown!

She of course saw the movement and took off. I could and prob should have fired from the hip from the start, I was that close.

Scope was fine for the 15m shot on a sika stag the previous day.

    I have the 4.5 on my 300wm.
The lack of fov is my only complaint with the scope.

I think you will be a happy man, I had used fixed 4x and 3-9 for years and went to the 4.5-14 thinking it wouldn't make much difference in the bush and extend my range.... you can get by with 4.5 in the bush but it is slow to get on target and as above sometimes its a scope full of brown/red and you dont know which bit you are looking at. less than 4 is the go in the bush, 3 is good 2 is great.
