In need of some expert advice and guidance. Looking at new scopes for my tikka t3 7mm08. Settled on a new Leupold with the CDS turret. Only issue is I cant make my mind up between the VX-3i 3.5-10 x 40 CDS ZL or the VX5HD 2-10 x 42 ZL which is $600 ish more. Has anyone had some experience with these two scopes, is it worth the extra $600. I'm shooting 450 yards max on occasion
The VX5 is worth it
The vx3 is a good scope, however The vx5 is a superior scope in every way, brighter crisper and clearer glass, locking dual turn turret system, better mag range etc etc.
If the budget is tight buy the vx3, it will do everything you need, if you can afford it though the vx5 will do everything a good bit better

Iv got both , a vx3 is on a 308 good scope comfortably shoot to 400y or 500 if I’m feeling adventurous but reds are pretty small at that range on 10 power , vx5hd is on a 7mm rm go,s to 15 power, definitely an upgrade on the vx3 but that said in your situation both the scopes you are looking at are 10 power so guess the question is do you want to save $600 , the vx3 is definitely adequate .
To add i would get the 3-15 ortho its more scope then you need when your looking at the stag at 1500y trying to work out how good he is you will appreciate it. Plus its a far more capable scope and 3x is still good down closeQuote:

Just note the 2-10 doesnt have parallax adjustment, glass quality is a massive step up. The 3-15 could come in handy when you're in the tops if.you do any of that hunting. Not alot of price difference either.
yeah I had a look at the 3-15 would be nice to have the parallax adjustment, but for the type of hunting I do doesnt really warrant the extra jump in price. Probably 1 in 5 deer I shoot would be over 300 yards, the rest would be within 20m. I just want to take abit of the guess work (hold over) out of some of those longer shots I get presented with. Just spent 6k on laser eye surgery so magnification isn't an issue :D, old eagle eyes now.Quote:

To confuse you a bit more. I use a leupold 4x14 vx3 boone and crockett on my 7mm08. I don't shoot a lot of long distance but have and are happy to take animals out to 450m haven't shot any further. I find it easy to use.
Zeroed in for 200m next line 300m -400m - 450- 500m .
Been very happy with this scope and its lasted very well, maybe 12-15yrs old now
And another for the VX5, great scopes, and if you choose the 2-10, that is one of the most underrated all round hunting scopes available at a reasonable price.
Hi bigbear, I've never had anything to do with the boone and crockett reticle, does it all depend what caliber and ammo you're using on what each line represents etc or can you move the lines or something? What ammo are you using and how accurate is it?Quote:

The only thing to be aware of is at 100y you will be shooting over inch and a half high only becomes a problem if you head or neck shoot.

Only thing I would add is the VX5HD is a very heavy scope in my opinion. A nice 3-9 or similar is far more portable for those of us that walk and stalk ;)A mate has a 4-14 VXR? with the firedot and the eye relief change between powers is terrible. He is going to get rid of it. I would too. Dont think that issue is there with the 5HD. Shame as it is a nicely balanced and weight scope.

Yeah 100% the 2-10 isn't bad weight or size wise. There are few better performing scopes weight wise than the vx3s, they fit the lightweight role very wellQuote:

Had both on a 6.5 Creedmoor. Sold the VX5 2-10. The VX3i isn't as good optically, however it's about 5oz heavier than the VX3i 3.5-10 which is still a nice scope.
I sold my vx5 to buy a vx3i and a bow. Vx3i has not disappointed but not in the same class as the vx5
True 2 power is about perfect in the thick shit too imo. Definatley better than the 3.5 (which is closer to 3.8 in actuality if I remember correctly).

I have the VX31 3,5 x 10 x 40 on my 308 and for the money i found it a good scope.
I love to have the VX5 but it comes down to budget and my budget wasnt alot so im more than happy with the vx3i. if not shooting generally past 300m , esp 400m i stick with the VX3i if
money is a issue. If not buy the best and the VX 5 will be better
I have all the above models except vx6. However my favourite general purpose scopes are vx3 and vx3i 2.5-8 * 36. These gather heaps of light, have good fov, compact, dial well and serve my 308 out to 600yards accurately and clearly. The vxr firedot 3-9 is also a very good utility scope. The vx5hd zl2 firedot is superb all round in 2-10*42. I prfer this over 3-15 for several reasons even though same price.
I have owned two VX3i scopes. They are great and I would buy a third. The VX5 is awesome though, if you have the money it’s worth the extra. I like the 3-15 though, such an ideal magnification range for all scenarios.

Have a vx3i CDS on two rifles that have had a lot of use from 10 metres out to 400. From first light to last light and all places in between. They have served us well and there has been no issues. You can spend more money on a higher spec model and it will do the job you require but you have to weigh up will it do it significantly better than the other model. It’s all fine having a great scope that can shoot a deer at 400 metres at last light, it’s another story trying to find it in the dark. Good luck with your choice.

VX3i is what you want on a lightweight rifle.
The clicks are a bit soft and dials can change while carrying. A coverd cap option can be good.
Optik is good.
Eyebox can be addressed by adding a cheekpiece sized for your own face.
Parallax is not needed under 300m but makes the view sharper and both crosshair and target can be focused at once. As said it can easily be set wrong when you step off the open country and into the bush. Adjusting the power down to 4x is a good fix for that then leave parralax at 100 or 200m.
