Coming together nicely

that coat went well, didnt gain much weight. will finish below 600g im confident of that now. Still curing, will sand again tomorrow. sorry its so slow guys lol
how much did blank plank cost?????
Looks bloody good
Ill have to monitor the next coat while it dry's and use the hair dryer to sort the bubbles out.

Sanded up and ready for the next coat. If you are going to try this at home be prepared to fix some stuff ups. I had to resin a few carbon strands on in a couple spots where I was too vigorous on the sanding.
Id try find carbon that was on a roll next time as the folds in my carbon fabric from China are visible in the pattern in a couple places.

Got time to coat it this morning, next time id look for a more suitable resin, this one doesn't coat well, forms drips and bubbles to easily and cure time is double what most people use... but lockdown... had to use what I could get.
AND HAPPY FATHERS DAY! especially to all the guys who for what ever reason are separated from their kids, and I don't mean lockdown separation, I mean legal separation or busted connection separation. In my line of work we have seen the craziest busted Dad and kids relationships restored, yeah it can take some years of grief but its worth holding on to all the hope for a better future you can get. Hang in there Dads hope is on His way.
Peace

Good on all counts
Looking good.
When you mix your resin don't stir it. Cut it like a knife with a popsicle stick back and forth with the odd very slow stir. Reduces bubbles in your resin before you start
Thanks Remmodel7 I did this on the last coat ands much reduced bubbles. Ill let it cure now and rub it back with fine grit and probably apply a matt spray finish to reduce the glare
Attachment 177897 Man this resin takes days to final cure!
It’s looking awesome mate! I’m looking forward to seeing the final product!
I remove bubbles with a lick of the gas torch
Also warm up your epoxy in warm water before mixing and applying. Removes the majority of bubbles
Attachment 177921 That's the finalish weight. still yet to final sand/polish. yet to put a buttpad on it tho. but to put in perspective it does include the trigger guard... so I'm super happy with the weight.
Looking back at it I'm confident I could have dropped a bit more weight taking more time at the stage of drilling out the butt and the forend... but no regrets for a first attempt... And for those worried about the strength - I have been hunting with a Paulowina stock with only a sealer coat for a year now on my Grendel (Pics in an earlier post. Granted ive not fallen headfirst down a slip face with a deer on my back while carrying the rifle but I don't plan to lol, Last time I did that I landed in A&E and stuffed up the end of a great roar trip
Good stuff 👍
Attachment 177967 OK for anyone who wants to give this process a go I have some blanks coming in from my supplier to sell for him on trade me. If you want them directly from here with free shipping just PM me. I can sort sizes according to your needed dimensions. $50 free shipping to metro addresses. Trade me will be $50 plus shipping. This stuff is super easy to work with... however carbon isn't so easy lol.
Having said that, this is the first time I have worked with Carbon and its coming along well. I have worked with fiberglass before when I was at high school when I made a few hockey sticks.
good on you fella.... another forum member has offered to sort me out with bit...a jolly fine fellow he is too.
this thread could have another chapter or three if others also have a go and post up results.
THANKYOU for giving us the nudge needed to have a go.
Im sure your blanks will be snapped up.

Attachment 178256Attachment 178257
sanding is a pain lol, getting there. I thinned down the tikka trigger guard to a more traditional look.
Attachment 178262 Bedding done, curing for the next 12 hours
Attachment 178270 Bedding went great. Much happier with it this time.
Ill tidy up the bedding this morning and get to the range this arvo. Ill get it matt spray coated monday and post some final pics during the week.
Ill also start my next build this arvo and try get the timing cut in half lol.
Attachment 178312 light enough for me. I do have a small touch up on the cheek piece as I sanded too much on the final sand. So ill have to repair that tonight and get it sanded before Mondays drop off to get clear coated
Attachment 178337 Bedding worked. I fired one shot to sight in, then this group with the 130 berger VLD hunting bullets. My 12 year old girl shot a 2" group at 500Y with her 22-250Ai so shes stoked too. now I owe her McDonalds lol

You got to be happy with that, well done
Attachment 178362
Not sure that last pic loaded OK. Im still getting used to operating the forum set up
Attachment 178380 starting to look the part. cant wait to get the spray clear coat on
so where is photo of the lass with her 2" at 500 yard group with 22-250???? and what load is that using, and what rifle???
Attachment 178396Attachment 178397
OK Micky Duck, My 12 year olds 2" group. She has shot at 100y about a dozen times since she was 7, had one go at 300 y last year and this was her 2nd attempt at 500y, first group was a couple days earlier with 4 shots at 2.6inches. Tikka with a MAB? barrel, I modified a stock for her. yet to fit lower rings. chambered in 22-250AI at Trueflite. Originally this barrel was a 22-243 but was so hard to reload for and accuracy was hard to achieve. so abandoned after 40 rounds and rechambered. Thanks Trueflite.
It shooting Berger 80.5 fullbore target at 3260. load development was quick, loaded 12 rounds, second group of 3 shot all touching so I stopped there. Attachment 178405
Attachment 178406Attachment 178407
So build no.2 under way. Something different - Stock for my Tikka long range set up. Stock blank cut. just over 800g and its an extended length stock. 48mm thick. Grain straight through the wrist... and before you freak out Im 80 Kg, next pick will show basic strength of the timber.
thats one hard case looking stock......that lass can shoot...80.5grn projectile...hmmm definately a fast twist barrel then.
pretty sure mine is 1;14 so the 60grn semi point is it for heavieness.
goes to show nothing wrong with 22-250 is given decent barrel
thanks for reply.
Attachment 178408
Don't try this with your Mcmillan carbon stock, I'm not saying itl'd break... but if it did you'd hate me lol.
Stock shape is experimental, trying not to copy anyone. Yeah the 22:250Ai has a 1:8 twist
Attachment 178423Attachment 178424Attachment 178425 Ill get this down to 500g at least before carbon. Im not out to prove the same point as I did in the other build. this will be a long range hunter and range rifle so too light and I'll get recoil shy lol
