Long range rig to double for target and hunting

Considering a long range rig, mostly for target shooting, but that can double for hunting as well.

I have identified a 300 PRC that is close to 4.5kg. What is some of the heavier rifles some of you carry around op tops hunts or for longer shots?

What is the average weight on the customs with a 3b 26” barrel?

    Cheers

Hardy hybrid. Dedicated long range target rifle... 2 minutes later, hunting setup barrel fitted ready to hit the hills on the next hunt

I'd say that's pretty heavy jump over into the commercial advertising page and look on alpine precisions page you'll find some 26" big magnums and most will have a weight in the comments somewhere might give you an idea on an average

What range do you intend to shoot ? 1000 yards is a bloody long way for a shot on an animal. If you want dual purpose hunt and gongs rifle I’d go 7mm and keep the weight and recoil manageable. I’ve got a 280ai 24 in bbl that’s 6lb bare rifle with brake. That’s pushing 162 AMAX at 2980fps plenty to get to 1000yrds. Would I attempt a shot on animal at that range, probably not. Or 7mm RM or even better 7mm Blaser mag but more weight on magnums. 7mm Blaser mag gets me 3060 fps with 180 VLDs

Caliber is fine. Weight too heavy for me for alpine rifle. 7-8.5lb scoped is the range where it doesn’t piss me off over a day.

Thanks Kelton. Did that and seems like the lighter ones are around 3.5kg.

KeengunNic, based on my previous inquiry, that setup will be close to $10k which is currently outside my budget.

Chainsaw, I limit my shots on game to well under 1000m, but would like to be able to stretch shots to 2000m on targets.

I think alot of the love affair with 7mm is at 180gns it well ticks all the boxes with very high for weight bc pills and recoil is less abrupt than say a 212gn 30 but like you say with the right stock designs and muzzle breaks and suppresors recoils never being less of an issue

Many years ago (25 yrs ago) I went down this same path buying a Remington Sendero in .300 WM for F class shoots and hunting.

I managed to achieve my longest kill on a goat (1250 mtrs) but there were a few things I learnt along the way.

On the range I was running a magnum round burning off 80+ grains of powder, heavy recoil while others were shooting .308’s or even 6.5x55 with less cost, less recoil.

After a 10 shot string my barrel was pretty hot and my shoulder was pretty sore!

For hunting the rifle setup was too heavy so carting it around all day was far from enjoyable.

I’ve often thought about getting back into F Class or PRS as it’s called but if I did it again I’d go for a medium cartridge like 6.5 CR, .243, 6mm Dasher

I also have my .284 Win which is a light weight hunting rifle setup for open tops, great to carry where a mate shot a bull Tahr at 520 mtrs with it back in May.

Earlier this year a mate bought a Ruger in 300 PRC with grand plans of shooting things out to 1800 mtrs but after a couple of trips carting that thing up and down some Otago hills the rifle has since been sold… wonder why 😉

Your gonna find it hard to do both hunting and target shooting with just one rifle as compromises will need to be made.

Cant argue with the price but I dont shoot many shots annually so it's never worried me purely hunting rounds I'm currently shooting 168 amax and 46gns of powder in a short .308 I think the amaxs were $60 a box the blaser mag I had was very efficient I shot 180gns for 68gn or powder but they were the expensive pointy projectiles and the expensive go fast powder

300wsm awesome. Mine is similar to @Dusty Fog 's except i use 200gn eldx. Kimber Montana with vx3i and suppressor weighing about 7lb total. I do shoot steel with it but not often or for long. It is accurate enough but its hard work managing recoil.
I would suggest something like that for hunting and buy a Bergara HMR in 6.5 Creedmore for target shooting maybe. They are good value and all the ones I have seen shoot arevery very accurate and pleasant to shoot a lot.

If you want to shoot out to 2000mtrs like you said then $10k May be your minimum on a set up.

He did not specify what accuracy results he expected at that distance :-)
