Looking to buy a new 300 win mag for my new scope any suggestions please

    Hi Fellas,
I have just ordered a new Swarovski Z5 with ballistic turrets for my riffle but have now decided to buy a new riffle and upgrade to a 300 win mag.
I don't want a custom build just a good one off the shelf, thinking maybe a Remington SPS-stainless or a Sako A7 stainless synthetic or something in this price range brand new. If someone has had a good experience with a 300 win mag off the shelf I would be eager to hear what brand etc and if they load their own ammo then keen to hear what load bullet etc they used for great accuracy as I have all the loading gear including Redding compition dies for the 300 win mag.

    Thanks in advance

A7 is good, most of the Sako 85 without the bullshit price (aka wank factor)

enjoy everyone telling you their dream rifle that they cant afford

Hmmm - if it were my money I'd be looking at a Browning or Sauer, both offer stainless/synthetic models in 300 Mag that are every bit as good as an A7 (one of which I've just had a good study of, functional enough but heavy, and I was not impressed by its "value for money") and you won't have to deal with the odious Beretta cabal.

If Bergara did a stainless version of the b14 hunter I'd look there. I have one (blued, syn) but the previous owner had the barrel fluted, a coating similar to cherakote and a different alloy floor plate.( saved a couple of hundred grams he said) They come threaded and I've got a T2 on it. Think they come with tally rings as well. All up it's just over 8lb with a vx5 3-15x44. Standard I'd guess 8.25-8.5lbs. I know you don't want custom but for the price you'd have a great action to work off later on if you wanted as all remington custom parts fit. It is what they call an improved remington action and it is just that. You could say mine has just had cosmetic changes so no bedding or custom barrel and it shots really well. It's holding half moa out to 650yds with 225 eld-m's. I tried the amax 208 and 212 eld-x plus 215 bergers. I wouldn't use less than 200gn bullets as you might as well use a 7mm mag if you use lighter ones IMO. The amax shot real well and I'd start there. Bergers are a bit pricey and the 225's are doing the job for me. Local shop has Sauers but I don't think they are stainless just coated like my Bergara. T3's are never a bad choice and I've heard the new ruger america's are shooting well. In fact most of the named brands have a 3 shot moa or better guarantee so you can choose more by fit and feel now a days. Really the top brands need to start making 1/2 moa or better to justify their higher price against the rest of the herd

What is your current 7mm rem mag and what are you trying to achieve by going to .300WM? Not a huge difference between these two so what is it you’re aiming for? Will help people steer you in the right direction.

My advice would be look for something with a decent stock, which rules out a lot of the budget options.

And an A7 is a tarted up tikka, for more $$. If you want a Sako get a real one...

I have a Tikka T3 Lite in 7 mm rem mag but it's probably a 2 MOA riffle at best, should be good out to 500 m and beyond but with that sort of Grouping 300 m is about it's lot. The boy is just getting into it so I thought I would donate him my riffle as 200 m would be about his sort of range.
Because I have 300 win mag dies I thought since there isn't much difference in the 2 I would go for that.
I am mainly shooting down on clearings but it would be good to be able to use it in the bush occasionally.
The Sako A7 is boasting 1 MOA out of the box which is about what I need, thought I would ask if anyone had any other ideas or if they had any experience with the Sako A 7 etc, cheers.

Mm, I’d be looking at .284 or .280, or even better a 7x64. You don’t need the grunt (and recoil, muzzle blast) the 300 will give you. Finding a set of dies isn’t a big deal.

Kimber maybe? Or a Sako 85? Steyr mannlicher classic would be nice too. None of them cheap, but you’d likely keep them forever. What about a Mauser? Some of them are very reasonable these days.

Otherwise you may as well just get a Savage or a Howa. Not a tikka fan if anyone hasnt guessed yet!

+1 for what @7x64 has suggested. I’d take a close look at 284 and 7mmSAUM given what you’ve stated or 300 SAUM or 300WSM if u want 30cal. Both those 7’s will get you out to 800 yds or more from a 20” bbl and a light weight rig and mild recoil. Your Z5 is going to limit you to 7-800 yds in come up anyway. The 300WM is a great caliber but u really need to go with a 26” bbl to get the best out of it. And a heavier rifle & more boot. There was a very good deal on here recently on a 7mmSAUM.

Having just gone through exactly this same journey, I'll share a couple of my items that went into my consideration and decision.

300 win mag is a beast! just look at the cartridge, but not as sharp recoil as some others out there due to the best one's out there being set up to take tame recoil and jump. The positives are you can now hurl large projectiles great distances with less windage effect - but that also comes with a gotcha... Size of projectile / jump / magazine size.

What I wanted was a heavy barrelled 300 WM so I could happily go to a range and smack gongs all afternoon or take out on the quad bike for a long range goat or deer etc.

What I had was a great 7mm RM that shot sub half moa but with the suppressor she was like frying pan hot after 2-3 shots so shooting longer strings....so consider your barrel in your solution (good for Thar hunting say but not target or gong smashing)

So yeaah I wanted a heavy barrel...
Next projectiles wanted to shoot amax 208's and eventually berger 230's for real long stuff along with 175/190 VLD's- so throat and magazine length were also a major factor.
Hmmmm a lot of options fell away at this stage - Sauer, Tikka, Sako, bergara etc etc.....
left with the new Browning Xbolt hells canyon and Remington Long range as the main front runners... from factory any how....

Remington were in stock with the (supposed m40'ish ) B&C stock which is great and mid/heavy contour barrel no issue with magazine but are hit and miss on quality - so do what I did and reach out to someone with a bore scope to check chambers and bore's are ok...

They're a bit hit and miss on this at the mo and well worth the extra due diligence on your part! you'll likely also need to drop $ on a thread and re-crown, timney, and bedding. but no different to any other... just be prepared!

Browning x-bolt Hells Canyon are as yet untried but lighter and with a really good mag length of 94.94mm - quite a bit more than the others out there comes factory threaded I think too?
lighter stock so you really will need a good recoil tamer supressor /brake for this. Down side supply I think is pretty thin on the ground although a mate has secured a 300wsm version.

Hope this helps your decision / search...

Why not buy another 7mm mag?
I would love one of these one day (you can give the rifle to me if you like lol) but the consensus is they are much of a muchness until you need bigger and heavier bullet weights above the 180gr then the 300 mag starts taking over.
In the old days when 500yrds was a long shot that weight was for anchoring bigger animals but nowadays as per @Carpe Diem has suggested its for retained energy, better/less wind drift etc.

Yeah I have tried a few different loads, powders, bullets etc but haven't been able to group it tighter. I think sometimes you get a good one and some times you don't.

Some riffle brands are boasting 1 MOA with any ammo. I want that and I'll be happy.
