Recently I flew home with Air NZ after working in the south island, and when I was unpacking my gear at home I found my 308 had been snapped in half while inside its locked hardcase.
I am looking for a replacement wooden “Monte Carlo” stock for her, so please send me a message if you know of any around. Apparently a repair would never be as strong as it was, so thats a plan B at this stage. Not really interested in a plastic stock if I can avoid it.

Actually with the right products and technique the repair can be stronger than the pre-break. Likely a weakness in the form of a defect or growth line affected the bond of lignin in the wood.
Very hard to completely conceal the repair though but it can be done.
Unsure how the hell it happened, but she's in 2 pieces. If i knew how to post an image from my phone I would.
ZKK 601. I would be happy with a repair but the local gunsmith said it was likely to be too expensive to be economically viable, and there is no guarantee it would work. His thoughts were that in his experience it would be weaker than it was before?
I've seen a few broken stocks that have been repaired. Done right you can barely see the break and its as strong, if not stronger, than the original stock. And some of those breaks were in to several pieces.
The best place I can think of to find a replacement stock is Boyds in the US.
You can repair it stronger than before the break happened, but yes it can be a wee bit of work. It's a specialist wood workers gimmick, you need to bond the fibers in the wood with glue so that the glue is soaked into the wood each side of the break and that the break is effectively solid timber again. There's a few steps in prepping the timber, and that needs to be done 100% right as you only really get one go. I don't know who would be the one to do it now as well...Quote:

Could you get a local joiner or someone knowledgeable to glue it up? This is the stuff I swear by for joinery these days, have used on hardwoods and softwoods and when I have tested to destruction its never broken on the bond line but through adjacent grain, so I'd be good with gluing it up. But maybe check with insurance company first? Though might not be worth a claim... :oh noes:

so - make an insurance claim against the airline for starters.
Then find a good , old-school woodworker and get it glued.
Consider drilling and fitting a piece of threaded rod into the two broken pieces to give additional holding strength.
Very few things can not be made to function again - finding the right person to do the job is the secret
Definitely make a claim with the airline if you haven’t already.

I fixed a few.
Rule 1 is to not use anything else than good epoxy resins.forget about araldite,it is crap, look at the norski epoxy available at Bunnings .
Rule 2 is to use brown tint to get your epoxy coloured which will hide most of the crack if well dosed.
Rule 3 is to use re enforcing metal rods wherever possible around the cracked area ( but hidden inside the stock ) to help strengthen the repair.
Alan Carr would do a good job of it.

Yeah don't throw it away, someone who know's what they are doing will be able to make that into a usable stock again.
