Hi All
What (if any) oil should you use for protection and lubrication of your rifle action and barrel?
Can you coat the outside of metal parts with oil for protection?
Thanks in advance.

you're about to be bombarded with every known substance on the planet no doubt, but I have always used long life CRC and wipe it on with a cloth sprayed with it, also use it to protect the bore when not in use, absolutely swear by it personally
Hoppes for day to day cleaning and just rub down the rifle with a used patch.
Storing a rifle I don't use much CRC long life inside and out.
Little and often, don't let it build up.
A little moly grease (a little is a slight amount on a cotton tip barely visible) on receiver and bolt contact patches like recoil lugs, and on the outside of the metal work a persistent corrosion preventer. Lanocote or LPS3 or something of those lines, nothing inside the barrel or chamber and nada on the lenses of the scope. Springs will still rust on a stainless gun, so they need a coating of some sort too.
you can go as simple or complicated as you want...bottom line,as long as gun is clean and metalwork has SOME KIND of oil whiped on it when it goes away it will be fine. over the years Ive used everything from flashharry shop bought stuff like breakfree CLP (awesome stuff) right down to oil off dipstick of landcruiser when out n about and rifle got wet... used motor oil for years and mums 3n1 sewing machine oil is pretty hard to beat for simple and all over use.
mobil 1 synthetic buy one litre and it will last you years
Ballistol.
Good for the metalwork, wood, leather and even allegedly wound cleaning.
Don't need much just a wipe on a rag and I have never had corrosion issues. Not very expensive (last I checked) and lasts a good bit.
The ole pig hunting 303 used to get some oil from the dip stick when the bolt got extra hard to move.
hoppes: if you dont use it as gun oil it makes great aftershave!
Just don't get lots of oil between the action & bedding as it can cause accuracy issues
Don’t use wd40 on anything gun related. It dries and leaves a gum type coating unlike crc and others. There are a vast array of oils out there. I use Hoppes for bore Solvent and ballastoll for Ed’s red for general oils. Specialist fouling solvents are a whole can in themselves….
Inox for summer, Breakfree clp winter protection.
CRC long life, or marine are my choices
I use CorrosionX:

Ballistol.
Per my earlier post. Ballistol for everything external. If really grubby in the bore Hoppes #9 on a wet patch, soak 10 minutes then bronze brush and follow with a dry patches until clean then a light ballistol patch for storage.
Pull it out and run a dry patch through before use. Sorted.
crc 808 silicone for outside / inside bolt, action - silicone grease for inside the bolt/firing pin, break clean the action/ bolt when dirty after afew weeks in the bush then re-lube and repeat
So the consensus is basically anything you fancy :)
+1 for Ballistol.
Also it smells pretty.
Or whatever you have that isn't a drying gumming oil like some of the crc or wd products. And don't get silicone near lenses, it's a slag to get off and there's a high chance you'll take the coating with it. That's any aerosol really... Also some products eat plastic stocks or soften wood.
I use Ballistol down the barrel to stop pitting but I kroil it out before a day at the range.
Inox
A mate picked up a stunning student teacher at a famous Hastings watering hole in the 70's after he had gone down to the pub after coming out of the bush. Still had some Hoppes on him after cleaning his rifle. She was entranced with his aftershave. He ended up marrying her. Unfortunately they went to Aussie and he never hunted again.
Ballistol on external surfaces.
MPro7 Gun Oil down the Bore.
Remington oil has been my choice for external use and especially for longer storage in barrel - swear by it - but corrosion X and break free is also great -Hoppes no 9 for barrel cleaning- I certainly would not use Hoppes for storage or on exterior metal its simply not designed for that -its a solvent not a protective oil - in my view and those who should know like a gunsmith mate CRC should only be used to loosen nuts -- it can get into places it should not - I take a little bottle of break free for overnight trips and will pull a rag with it on thru if I suspect moisture in barrel
G96 inside and out
Wipe down externally and bore with inox. I use atf on the bolt
Use the oil of your choice but put some effort into the environment your rifle will be stored in.
Yse some sort of dessicant to reduce the moisture in the air , and maybe organise a small incandescent lamp to heat the air and dry it as well
Finger
Generally whatever oil is closest. At the moment it's amsoil gun lubricant.
During the winter I will pull the bolt apart and wipe off any visible oil. That's with central otago night shooting when it's negative-something-bloody-cold. Found from experience the oil gets more viscous, slows the firing pin enough to cause light primer strike.
Lanocoat for storage anything longer than a few days.
