Magnum vs Standard DPT on 284

Lockdown finish’s soon and I’m about to set up my new (second hand) 284

I now have 2 suppressors. DPT M1 Magnum with stainless baffle and DPT M2 standard.

The M2 was set up light for my 7mm08 bushpig but I’m wondering whether to just use it also on the 20inch 284 to keep light and short. I’ve gone with Talley rings and soon to get a VX3 CDS so it will be nice and portable. Rock kindly gave me some 162 ELDX handloads doing about 2700 and I have some 139 Hornadys loaded up also

I’m not overly worried about recoil and don’t target shoot hundreds of rounds

What are the benefits of the Magnum suppressor - Significantly more noise and recoil reduction, longer life etc?

Just a question as I’ll probably keep both but once I sight in I’ll stick with the same one to avoid change in POi as the magnum is a little heavier

No experience of the magnum offering, but my non-magnum one is fine on my .284. I have the stainless baffle, which should last far longer than a standard aluminium one. It’s light and handy, but noise reduction could be better.

It’s always a trade off between weight and noise reduction, so the choice is yours as both will work well. The magnum will weigh more but will reduce noise better.

I’m sure the magnum will decrease recoil and barrel flip a touch, but moderators really don’t tame recoil that much anyway.

On a 284 the standard DPT is totally fine.

I put a mk1 magnum on mine as with my 17 inch barrel the rear of the magnum dpt came right back to just a couple of mm's off the forend which i like the look and balance of. No other reason.

The mk 1 magnums are just a standard suppressor with an extra tube section extending it rearward.

I dont really think you will notice an difference in reduction of sound or recoil going to the magnum.

But if you put an extra baffle or two on the front of either it will both reduce sound and recoil.

I have a M1 magnum on mine but mainly because of the short barrel to capture that extra stuff coming out the end and for aesthetic reasons (almost touching the stock). I did run stainless battles up until now but don’t bother anymore to keep weight down. If my alloy ones wear out it costs bugger all to replace them so no worries.

A magnum suppressor is around one baffle quieter than a non magnum suppressor on the same non magnum rifle.

Ie: a 5 baffle non magnum will sound similar to a 4 baffle magnum.

Thanks for the replies. I think I’ll follow stag stalker and just use the M2 standard on both and simply replace the baffles when required

I have been very impressed with the engineering and performance - thanks DPT

Does anyone know the actual recoil reduction with a standard DPT? I know a muzzle brake is better and I am very happy with the push vs kick on the 7mm08 but just interested if more than 20% as measured.

Have a look at all Gregs recoil comparison vids on youtube. Where he compares recoil between his terminator muzzle brakes vs open muzzle and in some vids also compares to suppressors.

Probably the best graphic demonstration of differences in felt recoil.

But in my experience a standard DPT reduces felt recoil considerably over an open muzzle.

Also while on the subject, not all brakes are created equal. There is a big difference in recoil reduction between the various designs. The side ported brakes with rearward angling ports work WAY better than anything else.

@DPT whats the difference in construction between the non magnum and magnum suppressors?

Sending a 260 Tikka down to you guys to be chopped to 18" just wondering if the magnum suppressor would be better for short 18" barrel.

I explained it above. The magnum is just the addition of an extension chamber rearward. No difference in construction. This is for the mk1 I havnt seen mk2's as yet.

The magnum has a longer rear chamber.

Standard will be fine. Ran standards on both of mine and no issues

Suppressors lengthen the recoil impulse, that in turn makes the suppressor feel like it reduces the recoil by quite a bit.

For me, the recoil of that 284 with 162 Is nothing. I used to run that suppressor with 6 baffles and it was much quieter then 4 baffles.
