I bought a new Steyr Mannlicher .243 (half stock) double triggers from a young Chris Zeisler at Sportsway's in Fort Street, Akld in 1974. Cost $420 and a new Sako Forrester .243 was $259. Should've bought the Sako.
At that time all .308 rifles were subsidised (or had the import tax removed) by the government and a new Sako .308 was around $190 from memory. Supposedly if we were invaded the government could seize the .308's for military use.
Think it was also something to do with CAC who manufactured 308 ammo in Mt Eden, helped them stay viable.
