    Mapping Apps for Cell Phones

    Greetings All,
My cell phone is on its last legs so I have been thinking of getting a map app with the new one. I am a bit of a technophobe when it comes to things electronic so I am leaning towards the Topo 50 using the phone as a GPS. I don't have a GPS so am still on paper maps and memory for the limited navigation that I do. Any thoughts?
    Regards and thanks Grandpamac.

NZTopo50 is a very good app. Free version is good. You can choose either north or south island.

New Zealand Topo Maps is fine too.

NZTopo50 is good. There was a thread about this recently. For pure navigation, I prefer iHike-GPS.

NZ Topo 50 offline by Right Place resources, pay for the offline map to download to your phone, then use in flight mode in the bush to save battery. Very useful and probably more use than my Garmin gets

Topo GPS gets you the whole country Linz data.
I think they’re all much of the same so check what’s included to decide which best suits your needs.

Yes this. Once this step is complete then the only limitation is GPS signal strength not something I have tested. Also NZTopo50 has good tracking and way point management if that is of interest.

iHike must be for Apple only.

NZ Topo 50 offline. Pretty hard to beat. Pay a few bucks, download north or south and away you go.

Another vote for NZ Topo50. Cost about $8 for each island. So worth it to be able to use offline, maps and aerial imagery, DOC public hunt areas, ability to search, save waypoints, even keep notes and add photos, etc etc .

Topo 50 is great as you have the ability to use offline, it does however lack definition and zoom on the satellite imagery.

I am sure they are pretty similar from a navigational perspective.

However one of the best things I have found with NZ topo 50 is that you can highlight the public land which has proven super useful when crossing private land to access the public estate.

It lets you eaisly determine when the hunting can begin. This is not possible on some of the other phone apps.

So another plus for NZ topo 50
