Thread: Marlin rimfire rifles.

I have had a good look for the Marlin range of rimfire rifles, particularly the 17hmr .
Is no one importing this brand anymore??

Marlin firearms was established about 1870 by John Marlin. It was bought by Remington 2007, and subsequently bought by Ruger 2020 when Remington went bankrupt. Marlin made very good lever actions - the model 336 being the second highest selling centrefire sporter in history. They also made alot of rimfires, eg the model 60 semiauto, the biggest selling 22LR rimfire ever. In NZ they were previously imported by Outdoor Brands in Akld, but as of this time I don't know who imports them. To my hazy knowledge Ruger have only reproduced the model 336 lever - and made a nice job of it. Ruger may produce more rimfire models in time - but likely with Ruger barrels instead of the Marlin microgrooves which were very good. Marlin microgrooves much more accurate in stock 22 semi models than the ruger 10/22. Was looking at some target sets today and one model 60 Marlin averaged 0.34" for 5 groups at 50m, while a second 60 averaged 0.295". Close to match accuracy.

Where to find a Marlin rimfire now - secondhand on trademe! Still some very good bargains turning up in 17HMR, 22WMR and 22LR. My recent 22WMR 982SV heavy barrel could shoot 0.2 - 0.35" groups for two of us at 50m, and 0.7" at 100m. The 17HMRs that pop up should match this - very accurate. Spare mags from Riflemag.co.uk, and have just had conversation with DeltaMike in Invercargill, and they will be importing replacement spring sets etc from Mcarbo for the Marlins in a month or three.

Can be very accurate - often outperform rifles worth 2-3x the price. Well worth a look if you find a good one. PS there was a Marlin heavy barrel 17HMR with a Nikko Nighteater 3-10x on trademe for $450-500 in Invercargill - including kit. Awesome deal for the dollar. Could poss ask that seller to relist. Near new condition..but don't know if still available.

Thanks Mudgripz , I will try to find a link to the Marlin you mentioned as it sounds ideal. Shame they are no longer about , personally I had a much better run from them than any Savage i owned.

The last run of his auction expired 21/2 - have sent him request to relist. Keep an eye on tme for Marlin 17s.

Yes my Marlin models (about 15) were more accurate than my Savages but Savage heavy barrel model rimfires can be nice arms, and as you will likely know they make some nice accurate centrefires.

Was really keen on this myself - great value - esp as he has a cleaning kit with it. Riverton Southland. Well worth a look...alot of rifle for bugger all.

I Hit the Buy now button mate, sounds like it's done 100 rds if lucky. Gundoc might be getting a call for a threading job and a trigger tune. Basically a new rifle. Thanks for the heads up.

Can't go wrong there - near new condition. Good copper clean for barrel, then 17gr Hornady V-Max good to start with. Should be a very precise wee shooter.

Spare 4 and 7 shot mags pop up regularly on tme for $45-75. Likely Marlin T-900 trigger - plenty on youtube re adjustment.

I used to have a model 60. It had quite a heavy barrel with the micro groove barrel. It was a bloody tack driver and I pulled off some amazing shots with it.

Lost that in the stupid buy back bullshit.

I know it looks a horrible plastic brown. From my knowledge it actually a hardwood stock, pressed checking.
They look better in real life but don't look for the awesome wood grain...there isn't any.
However what you do have is a very stable and consistent platform. Combined with a Microgroove barrel they can be serious tack drivers .

Those scopes were $300 ish new...and they are a decent scope too. Especially with the saddle focus Adjustable objective.... I use one on a 303....

I think I have a heavy barrel Marlin 17hmr in the safe. Has a Hawke scope. What’s the price for one of these?

Viper - keep us posted on this rifle when you get it. Pic or two.. I feel like I own 0.0027% of it because I watched it on tme for two months and nearly hit button several times - as did team mate. Such a dam good deal - and nice Nikko scope as Tim says. What is serial number - and is it made in Marlin factory in Connecticut, or from Remington period in Kentucky (Remlins)? Marlin better.

Yep likely stained beechwood - not alot of grain but still nice looking unit with checkering etc. Had several of.. Marlin did put some out in walnut stocks, but usually older rifles or deluxe models eg Model 60 DLX Anniversary - an absolute gem.

Muzza - how do you find the 17 Mach 2? A little round that has interested me alot for years. Like a flat shooting 22 (stinger case)with an extra 25m or so. I did buy one in Savage Mk 1 but it was a dud - shot terribly and it went straight back. It was an oddity - not normal for Savage. But did not buy another M2 as the 17HMR then came out and basically superceded it. Always been a question but - how does it shoot, holdover, accuracy, ammo supply these days, cost etc..

This is a typical stained beechwood, checkered stock Marlin - a 90s model 60DL. A nice clean tidy appearance. This example supremely accurate with 0.295" four group average at 50m - and that was with hunting HV ammo - the old yellow and black Aussie Powerpoint of 10-15 years ago.
