    Mauser M18 223 Thoughts

Local gun shop is having a clean out. They’ve got a brand new suppressed, scoped M18 SS Mauser in 223 for a $1000.

Has anyone had much experience with them? I’ve spent too much time reading the 223 on deer thread and want to have a play. What kind of projectile choice would I be governed to by the 1:10 twist?
I sold my 1:12 Tikka a few years ago but was always wanting to play with some heavier pills.

    Cheers

I've got one cut down to 15inchs, love it for goats and fallow out to 250meters with 55gr hornady sp.
The trigger is slightly better than a tikka.
The 3 position safety has caught me out a few times, so only use x2 positions.
I feel the M18 are a quality rifle, that I went out and brought another in 7mmRM. At that price I'd grab it.

I don't reload but have used factory fiochhi 50gr and 55gr Vmax but the hornady training ammo in 55gr sp is what I use the most

Couple of threads on these rifles I think that may help:

Personally, I've had a Mauser M12 and loved it.

Should be able to run the Sierra 65gr game king in the 10 twist, they generally shoot very well and perform very well on deer.

In my experience, 1-10 twist is great with 55/64/65 gr soft points. Maybe 68/69 gr hollow point match. Longer/heavier/tipped/streamlined copper projectiles need a 1-7 or 1-8 twist.

It would also work with the 70 grain Speer sp - which aren't slippy, but REALLY work well.

I’ll have it my hot little hands today.
I’ve never reloaded for a small rifle. What’s the go to for brass, primers etc? 2206H seems to be the powder of choice although I do have some 2208 sitting at home.
I’ll grab some of the bulk Hornady soft Point ammo for mucking round with.

Has anyone got any 65 gr Gamekings they’d part with? Seems to be a common mention on a lot of threads to do with slower twist 223 for use on deer. I also see the 50 - 55 gr TTSX mentioned quite often as well.

I have just revisited my 65gr load.
It is 25.5gr 2206h fed small rifle primer lapua brass 10 tho jump to the lands.
It shoots very very well, I was running it at 25.7gr but have found 25.5gr to shoot best.
