    Mauser magazine spring

Does anyone have a mag spring that will fit a Mauser 98? I have a very nice Husqvarna 1640 in .30/06, but the third and fifth round in the mag face plant into the front of the mag well when feeding...the spring is too weak.
I swapped it with one from another rifle for a test and it feeds perfectly. So at the moment I have two Huskies sharing the same magazine spring, which isn't ideal in the long run. Pretty sure its just a standard 98 size spring, unless someone knows different?

Have you tried a bit of a gentle tug to reverse the squash on it? If you're gentle about it the springs tend to pick up a bit more life and start doing their job again - for a while. Might get you through until you can find a replacement...

That thought crossed my mind too, unusual that it's only the odd-side rounds...

Yup it’s the rails and the complexity of Mauser type feeding. Some landmark posts from master American custom riflemakers in the 90s relating to feed rails, timing, mag spring tension etc. Bear in mind with a true Mauser CRF claw extractor it is so precise that varying ammo and rim tolerances are significant.

Mauser did something like a dozen different feed rail and followers.
I had an issue with mine and it was the something as simple as the edges of the pressed follower getting stuck between the mag box and the reciever rail on the last round. Von Gruff put a very good method of calculating the measurements for this on an African hunting forum I'm on.
It used diagrams of stacked cartridges and how they were measured.

Yes, I got annoyed with the one I sporterised from a Syrian m48a with a buggered barrel - the extractor spring tension was making the bolt a dog and the click of the thing springing over the cases rim as it moved up out of the mag into line with the chamber was like something out of a movie. 'Sniper - take the shot' - CLICK!!!!!!! with the video of the guys' hand turning the bolt down... Every animal in 300miles going 'nope, I'm out'.

I polished the back end of the extractor's leg down to remove a lot of the unnecessary or excessive tension which helped heaps. Unfortunately I did that after I reshaped the claw (which meant that it wasn't long enough to still do it's job - which meant that I had to get it built back up which also meant the thing is now much tougher). After that fluff about, it's now perfectly functional click free and (purists look away now) much better as it's no longer fully controlled round feed as it will click over a rim of a round dropped on top of the magazine as it's chambered without smashing anything. All while still doing everything else it's meant to. Took a LOT of work to get there though...
