The media and how they describe firearms

So was reading the read up about the bedroom murders and about half way down my eyes started to bleed, the terminology used to describe firearms are so bad they don't even make sense, if they want to bother trying to provide details why wouldn't they get them right?
None of the (real and bullshit) details make any sense to people who know nothing about firearms anyway.


• In his friend John's gun safe he was storing a Stag .223 semi-automatic rifle, a Ruger SR. 22 semi-automatic assault-type rifle and a .22-calibre assault-type rifle.
• At the house Mowatt lived in at Waimauku, police found a semi-automatic-style Ruger .22 rifle, a Remington shotgun, an airgun, a crossbow and arrows, grenades and mortar rounds and live ammunition.
• In the boot of Mowatt's car, they found a Ruger rifle stock with a sight scope attached and a .22 calibre firearm.
• At his home under renovation in Te Atatu, they found a large amount of ammunition, a .223 Remington rifle, a Stag-15 rifle, a DP wooden-barrel rifle and a bolt-action rifle.
• At a rented storage unit in Mowatt's name, they found a Ruger semi-automatic rifle.

Add to that their regular use of "high calibre rifles" and "point blank range". But at the end of the day the media don't care, it's more about alarming the public than being accurate in order to keep the gun fraternity happy.

Think that goes for most topics, not just firearms!

Much has been written as to the low calibre (no pun intended) of the modern journalist, they are under huge pressure to pump out as much clickbait as possible so even if they were inclined to check the facts they just don't get the time.

Also many young journalists are the leftovers of the "journalism" classes, the good ones end up in PR firms as it's better paid and way more fun. Journalism is generally very poorly paid so the good ones who don't care about the money will be there to inflict upon the masses their own personal agenda(s) which they will be very passionate and one sided about. Add in the fact most of their lecturers would have been left leaning and it's not hard to see how we end up with an ill informed anti gun mainstream media.

The question is what can we do about this type of stupidity? Hold firearm lessons for Journos... That would likely backfire (excuse the pun).

I think the issue really is where the fuck are they getting these words from? They don't even make sense.

Anyone able to explain to me what a sight scope and a semi-automatic-style gun is?

They obviously have no knowledge and are just repeating words they've heard and strung them together to sound good to uninformed ears. They are after sensation not a balanced report. Sensation sells. They have a bias towards making money so will not let the truth get in the way of a good story.

I like the term assault style. I didn't know assault had a style. Is it in fashion to assault people?

Wooden the barrel burn out pretty quick, speshly in a modern high calibre automatic-style gun?

My neighbour is a journalist for the local paper and by sheer chance he was discussing this bust with me over the weekend and it took some talking to convince him that the description of the firearms was slightly over the top. His wife was gobbing off about semi autos and how they should not be allowed and were not needed in NZ but she did put the brakes on when I said that I had one in the safe.

After a bit more of a chat I worked out that she was talking about full autos so I then had to explain the subtle difference between them

Not sure I would call it a subtle difference in anything other than the spelling of the name. Its like saying I am popping out for a shot or popping out for a shit. Very close to the same when written down (only one letter difference) but VERY different in the equipment needed for the task at hand.....

The DP rifle must fire two projectiles with one pull of the trigger, thus the DP stands for double penetration. :) Wooden that be good?

Armored cars are not uncommon, long arms and handguns are controlled, but allowed to licensed owners.
Mexico, has a very high crime rate, corrupt official's, police and legal system, very high murder rate, low crime report rate, the average Mexican does not trust police and justice system, murder of officials' and media that cant be bought, is common,
and has been in a low level war, against criminal gangs, and drug cartels for a decade or more.
You can get anything you want, if you can afford to pay.
I would consider 8 rifles, a handgun and a rpg to be very low armament, for one of the biggest cartel boss to be caught with. especial with elite Mexican Federal forces, hunting him.
