    Mil/mrad scope for 22lr?

    Hey all!

    Anyone know of a mil/mrad scope suitable for a 22? Everything I seem to find is MOA.

    I know your not going to do much dialing on a 22 but would be good for my boys to learn, my current scopes are in mil so hard to learn a new language lol.

    Cheers

    I see a lot of competitive shooters running ZCO 5-27 scopes on their Vudoo V22 or Rimx.

    ZCO5-27 has heaps of elevation (35mil) with 0.1mil/click turrent, if budget is not your major concern.

    Hmm - if you don't want to spend megabucks - the Sightron scopes work pretty well dialing on 22's, I run a couple of the S111's but you don't have to go to that grade. Another very nice scope for a 22 is the Clear-Ridge 4-16, I really like mine and have made the podium in several competitions with it on a 22.

    How much do you want to spend?
    Any Mrad scope will work just fine for a 22lr, parallax that adjusts down to 25 yards can be an advantage but there are lots of scopes that'll do that.
    I do lots of dialing with my 22lr, but it'll depend on what your usage is.

    Intended use and budget will determine the best option.

    As Beetroot said, short pralaz is the key for rimfire scopes.

    Vortex Venom etc might be worth a look.

    If you could mention magnification range and expected price that would help a lot to narrow things down a bit.

    I picked up an Athlon Midas Tac 4-16 at the recommendation of Blair from Section22. Was great advice!

    I'm running the Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16x44 FFP. This scope has been a game changer for me.

    The mil reticle provides perfect correlation with subs, and being FFP its not dependent on magnification.

    60m zero
    70m = 0.5 mil
    80m = 1.0 mil
    90m = 1.5 mil
    100m = 2.0 mil

    Past 90m I tend to dial but not always, depends on the situation.

    I'm routinely shooting magpies, hares, bunnies past 80m in our one paddock (minimum range), some days everything will be >90m, my favourite post is 105m. I shot a handful of birds last week around 115-120m.

    The FFP really comes into its own with subs. I normally shoot on 16x power but when the birds are in the thick pines I'll wind it back to 10x or whatever for better field of view and improved target acquisition. Range can vary from 40m to 80m as I shoot along the outer row of trees - the FFP means that my drops are always the same. This is invaluable.

    Dialling has been accurate and repeatable. No concerns at all there.

    I always think you should spend the same on the optic as you did on the rifle, give or take. The rifle cost me $700, the optic was $600 from Broncos. It's been a great buy.

    Here's one I have my eye on for my EM-332 - https://www.scopeuout.co.nz/collecti...x44-riflescope
    There's a 6-24 version as well.

    Arken SH4 would be my pick. We’ve had a good selection through our store of affordable mrad’s and the Arken are a level above anything else in their price range. However they are hard to get due to demand out of USA. Failing that the Athlon helos gen 2 is a distinct second place, with vortex offerings coming in third. The mechanics on the Helios run rings around anything vortex below the pst.

    I have both the 4-16 and the 6-24 of these (Nikko Stirling Diamond LR) and they are very useful scopes for the money

    You bloody legends! Thanks very much, I will check out these recommendations.

    Was originally thinking a 3-9 but after your post @Flyblown I am reconsidering.

    Budget is $500 to roughly $1000, if I could keep it under/around 1k with some rings that would be sweet.

    Cheers

    I would be wary about getting “too much” scope for a rimfire. If you are competition shooting or always shooting longer range gongs, then a 6-24 is cool, but if it is a small game hunting rifle then a minimum magnification of 6x is too much and 24x is pointless on a rabbit at 100m.

    I don’t shoot targets for fun and would estimate that in any 10 shots on small game I will dial once, maximum. The rest are a quick process of range / acquire target / holdover / fire. As long as a dialling mechanism has a good return to home test outcome on paper, you’re good to go. There’s always a temptation to go for gold with scopes, but you’ve got to work within the practical limitations of rimfire ammunition to find a sensible match with optics, and application is the main driver.

    What Flyblown says about power is correct. The guys I know who win at 22 comps run thier scopes at 6x for most shots. My own 22 comp scope is a 3.5-10 and I've never found it a limitation.

    As a broad general proposition this is not wrong, but as is the case for all general propositions, in reality things are more nuanced.

    In my all small game hunting I have never once felt I needed more Field Of View. I generally shoot small games when they are still. Even if in the odd occasions where I shot a moving animal, they were far enough that I never felt FOV was an issue. So I do not think a minimum of 6 power is a problem based on FOV concerns. Where 6 power can be a problem is when the scope does not focus down near enough. I have a VX2 6-18 on a 17 hmr and when I have a possum sitting within a few meters from me on a tree branch or a rabbit just under my feet, it can be annoying because the scope's minimum focusing distance is 50m. So even at 6x power, at a few metres away everything is out of focus. But you have a scope that can focus down to 10m then this is not going to be an issue. Lower powered magnification significantly mitigates this problem.

    As to higher power for longer distance, it depends on if you shoot free hand. if you always shoot prone and off a bipod/bag, your rifle will be a lot steadier and you would not necessarily need high power scope to shoot well. But on the other hand if you shoot free hand, then you will never make the rifle truly steady. Accurate shooting is all about pulling the trigger when the crosshair covers the centre of your target. Then magnification matters a lot. The larger the magnification the better you can tell how your crosshair is moving and it helps you to pick the right moment to pull the trigger.

    in indoor sporting rifle clubs, they shoot at 25 metres, and you will see that the standard equipment for most seasoned shooters is 20x scope.

    Same with silhouette shooting, the steel ram is placed at 100m and most seasoned shooters use 20x scope. The steel ram is bigger than a rabbit's head.

    One of my hunting 22 semi sports a 2-16, and I shoot at the 16 end most of the time whether it is 30 or 80 metres. When I shoot at 100m I do wish I had more magnification.
