Monoculars - does anyone use them?

I have somewhat fubar'd eyesight, very strong left eye with a weak right eye. So I effectively have non-binocular vision (poor depth perception).

It dawned on me that I might as well get a monocular as its smaller and lighter (and probably easier to use on one eye). I current use Leupold 8x30 Yosemites, so wasn't thinking anything to big.

I'd like to hear if anyone has any thoughts and experiences cheers.

I bought a couple of monoculars and have one to my son. Asked him how he found it, he has very poor sight in one eye. He loved it over the binoculars he was using. I prefer binoculars, but have good vision.
I was surprised at his enthusiasm

I know of chaps who have chopped binos in half to make one. Very tempted as have old set of veis 10x50s with awesome clarity but barrels no longer line up. Too heavy to cart around compared to modern stuff but optically awesome....if you faff around and hold them correctly, cutting them in half leaving the guts on preferred barrel would solve both issues.

Have used a proper one years ago, fixed 8x think it was. Good enough but scope was just as easy to use, which is another way to create one lol.

I have a Vixen 8x30 monocular, which lives permanently in my vehicle.
So handy to use, and fits in my top pocket!

I often just use my Leica rangefinder for spotting game. It isn't as good as binoculars, but it is as good as a monocular and also tells me the distance to the target.

Binoculars barrel focus can be separately adjusted for each eye, but if the difference in your eyes is outside the adjustment range, you might have to go mono.

I broke a pair of 6x30 pocket binos made 2 monoculars from them. Easy to use less cumbersome with a wide fov. If you find anything you can check it with your scope. It soon gets tiring waving a rifle around looking for stuff. Not to mention disconcerting for any others in the area

Monoculars usually suck, if you use a rifle scope, spotting scope or range finder for a decent length of time you'll get considerably more eye fatigue than with binos.
Binos give better FOV, are more ergonomic to hold, and easier to hold steady.
That being said if one eye isn't working none of those down sides apply.

It'd be easy enough to try blocking one of the barrels and see if it makes a difference.
If you notice no negative effects then may as well get a monocular for the smaller size and weight.

Yep, being left eye dominant the monocular doesn't worry me

My son is completely blind in one eye. I think I'll get him a monocular. Cheaper and lighter. Why not?

If i had one of those, I would have to quote Lord Neilson each time.....

He put his telescope up to his blind eye and said, "I see no ships.... only hardships..."
