Thread: Mossberg Patrol vs Tikka t3x Bush, 3-9 Scopes

Hi all,
Had my eyes set on a Mossberg Patrol or Scout as a bush gun, with a mid range 3-9 scope.
Walked into the local and they got me hands on with the Tikka T3x Bush Hunter.
Do you think it is worth the extra $700?

I am primarily after a bush rifle but it would be nice to stretch across clearings / gullies.

Similarly, any good recommendations for mid range 3-9 scopes? Have eyes on vortex or leupold.

The Tikka Leupold combination is proven and reliable, great resale value should you require an upgrade later on

as for scopes, any second hand leupy (vx-1 to vx-freedom) or burris will do well!

What are the barrel lengths on the Mossbergs? That would play a role in my decision making as I like short barrels. Your preference may differ. Yes, you can get them chopped, but it's extra hassle and expense.

They are both 16", and similar weight though the tikka slightly lighter

OK, that's not going to be a differentiating factor. I don't know much about Mossberg rifles, but I'm sure they do the job. You won't hear many complaints about Tikkas apart from they are an unoriginal purchase or some such bullshit.

they dont, most missbergs shoot like shit (3moa groups and larger)

mostly due to barrels being very low quality and the bedding design being absolute dogshit. Resale value very very low.

Mate ive got a Mossberg patrol as a bush gun and there is not much bad I can say about it. Groups well within 1 MOA all the way to 500m, havent done any load dev with it but 150grain pills seem to be the go for it. No issues feeding with the PMAG either.

Scope wise i went cheap and got a Bushnell Trophy XLT 3-9x40 which ive been pretty happy with for a bush rifle, good FOV and not overly expensive that im worried about it.

If money is a factor, get the Mossberg and put the spare cash to a scope and suppressor, but if youve got the cash Tikka and good scope is a winner.

I bought a patrol for 899 from reloaders about a year and a half ago. In 308 I like the magazine interchangeability. I did have one quality control issue that got taken care of by importer. That shoots one moa at a hundred pretty good if I do my part

If you're worried about the $700 difference wait a year and save some coin. WAY CHEAPER to buy the tikka 1st up

Not from what I've seen on the range as a NRO - the Mossberg setup might not be the most gucci out there but then I wouldn't exactly call Tikka gucci either. For a bush rifle, perfectly adequate and if it won't group decently from new take it back (like all new firearms).

First of all you test different ammo. By the time a shooter has figured out its the gun that is crap he's spent quite a good part of those 700 bucks... OR just buy a tikka and some sako ammo and enjoy your hunting ...

There are quite a few other good firearms out there that are not tikkas and still shoot good, by the way if it must be something else (Howas for example, but do not know whether they do a bush gun setup...)

If not for the retarded bedding and the shoddy barrel quality the mossbergs would not be bad rifles by the way, which makes the whole thing even more sad.

In any case for something that will last decades (unless the next jacinda takes it away) 700 bucks more is actually not that much

Well, of the rifles I've seen people bring to the range new and sighting in - the Mossberg ones have not stood out as anything different to anything else that's been brought up and shot. Easily as capable as "minute of shooter" anyway.

I recall when the Tikkas first showed up, everyone bitched about shitty bedding and crap barrels (the early ones even had a few blowups due to a bad batch of barrel steel). Maybe there was a bad one or two that got encountered somewhere along the line by you but it doesn't seem to be the norm I've seen. In comparison I have seen a crap grouping Sako recently - and a CZ that wouldn't play at all (misfires and all sorts of tricks).

Everyone has their pet rifle they dont like. Bit like the ford holden thing. Makes me laugh the more expensive rifle is better than the cheaper one who would of thought. Ive got both my tikka is the better rifle but the complete set up is twice the price of the mossy. Be pretty pissed if it wasnt. The mossy has claimed more animals....
