My new hunting rifle

Gday so about a we or so back I was after advice on a new rifle well I umed and arrd about a few nice ones on here but in the end settled on a new howa m1500 black houge stock with a leupold vx freedom 3.9x40. I read a lot of good things about these rifles and next to no bad things apart from it being heavy but think that’s just a case of needing to harden up haha if some of the old deer cullers heard them yarns they would have a giggle ! Any way I’m happy as with it so far and I know I will be when I sight in to as have used a few before and again reviews show very good accuracy. Just got to find a ammo it likes and go from there. Has anyone use the different brand hollow points in 308? Thanks to those who helped me in the quest for a rifle Attachment 105868

mate......for sub 150 yard shooting a big fat round nose with loads of exposed lead will see you on the money...as I said before try a box of 180 grn winchester factory stuff for your bush stalking and if you think you will be stretching legs/barrel find another load for open country/longer shots. dont over think it.with a bit of luck the 180s sighted in smack on at a hundy will see a lighter/faster load a couple of inches high...job done. if you have itch/urge for a light hollow point load (goats/fallow??) get belmont in wanganui to load you up a batch of speer 130grn hpfb loads,,,they are nicknamed handgrenades and are a favourite of lads from a chopper for head/neck shots as they are VERY explosive at .308 velocities.

Shoot a few groups with the bipod, then a few over a day bag etc. Those Hogue stocks can be a bit flexy and not shoot as well with a bipod.

There is a great range of factory loads and projectiles to load if you choose to later on. It depends on your hunting country as to the type of bullet you use. Pointed higher BC bullets are better for open country and heavier round nose bullets are good up close. I would look for a bullet that is good for the majority of your shooting needs. I would use a pointed type bullet as they will work in all the likely situations you are going to encounter.

Howa are a good brand. Congratulations. 308 is really common so as far as factory ammo is concerned, you have a lot of options.

Try a few different brands of ammo. My howa 308 shoots well with Rem 150gn corelocts

nothing wrong with howa, just a wetherby with a different stock and lots cheaper
