Are we there yet?
So after a lot of phone calls around the country, actually finding something we liked at short notice was more of a challenge that you'd think. Unavailable models we wanted, long lead times, unavailable calibers we were looking at, the budget not stretching far enough for a full set up of a specific rifle etc etc. We had a deadline as well...so had to make the call.
Essentially we wanted a set up that was ready to go, basically he will be given it and could go shoot a deer the same day. So getting optics, ammo, case, sling all in one deal within our budget was the key point really. We also wanted a versatile caliber his missus and kids could shoot on family hunts too...and have something he'd not be scared to use as well was pretty important!
So we pretty much ended up with what I thought would be suitable in the first case. I know they're a common rifle, but I kept coming back to - if someone gave me this would I be happy...and to be fair I think I'd be stoked. So we ended up with a 20 inch Bavarian in 6.5x55, with a Swaro 3.5-18x44. Just about to go pick it up now.
Shooters World in Gore did us a great deal on the full set up and it came in well within budget.

Very nice, I think the wood on that one is nicer than mine. Mine is very dark so not as much contrast between the stock and the fore-end.
I put together something similar a few years ago for someones 21 st. Classic Mauser 98 action, custom walnut stock, Swarovski 3 to 9, conetrol rings, leather sling with name inscribed, floorplate engraved with name and date etc. custom carrying bag and custom made knife with name engraved. Really nice job and says he will never sell it. All up about 5k then. Still possible for about 6k. Can send photos of similar rifle if you wish. It was 7x57.
Good stuff Josh, and Lindsay to the rescue again
I bought my Deluxe and many other rifles and guns over the years off him, he's helped me out a few times.
Your Mate will love it.
As to new rifles in this price range , as in hunting rifles , that are already in or ready available ? , not so much .
If you go 1/2 custom , ie nice action new barrel/stock etc , you could have something REAL nice , classy .
I would go for a fully wooded mannlicher carbine type look , ie a old Sako carbine look or a Mauser 66 .
But with a modern twist , the make the wood a laminate , case colour the action & end cap , high gloss blue on the rest .
Calibre up to you , the Mauser 66 would have one other feature , 2 part takedown stock , and had to say no to 7x57 cal in the 66 .
QD scope mounts for both , .
Don’t wanna get anything that’s just a faze ie can’t by ammo in 10 years
6.5x55 would be good it’s been arround over 100 years so far and only getting more popular
For presents I get a really nice knife made and get it inscribed with the persons name
Given that Josh's original post was 2018. I reckon they might have it sorted by now [emoji23]

Do you understand why it's so hard to choose a gift for them? My mom says I should give them 2 different gifts, one for my grandma and one for my grandpa, but if my grandma finds out I got my grandpa a firearm, she will stop talking to me. Lol. I decided not to risk it and get them a universal gift, like these gift baskets: www.jetgiftbaskets.com . But if I give them a basket like this, my grandpa will stop talking to me. Lol. I think I'm in trouble.
Toz 22 with 4 x tasco. History right there!
