Been said a few times already, even by Hornady themselves on their podacast:
The 7 PRC is NOT :
A competitor to the 7mm STW/28 Nosler/ 7mm Rem Ultra Mag
The 7PRC is:
An 'optimised' 7mm Rem Mag that would be loaded long to the confines of a Rem 700 L/A magazine (all the way out to about 3.6" instead of 3.2" SAAMI) but within the confines of a Tikka T3 magazine (about 3.34"), stuff that you can buy off the shelf vs handloading.
Another essential, is that factory rifles come with the correct twist rate out of the box.
The fact that Hornady has three different lengths of PRC cartridges is interesting.
Winchester tried a similar family of cartridges with their WSM and WSSM lines, which apart from the 300 WSM, went out a while ago.
Arguably the RSAUM was the predecessor to the 6.5 PRC... the fact that ADG is offering the 6.5-7 PRC AW as component brass speaks volumes.
However, all this debate has failed to refocus on the part that matters, which is the BULLET!
The 180 ELDM would do fine for most in anything from a 7mmBR, 7mm08, 7X57, 280 Rem, 280AI etc... so long as your barrel and action can fit it.
