One further point to add.
The PRC series of cartridges was in part designed to cater for those who wished to compete in the the PRS competitions with off the shelf rifles and ammo.
Hornady saw an opportunity in the market and are trying to exploit it.
Time will tell if it is viable or not.
The PRC cartridges from Hornady might share 'precision' in the name, but they have little space on the US competitive PRS circuit.
It's been distilled down to forumula, with a 25lb rifle shooting a projectile between 6-6.5 mm (or 25cal) around 2750-2900 fps.
You might see them featuring in NRL hunter matches or 'steel safari' but in terms of multi-round stages, you are going to be dealing with more recoil (less ability to spot impacts), more heat (mirage from barrel and moderator) and overall lower magazine capacity due to the larger case.
The 6.5 PRC is arguably a George Gardner effort, as he wanted 6.5 SAUM to keep going after Remington canned it (they kill all their darlings).
Precision Rifle Cartridge is a nice way to say 'magnum', but the verbiage is confusing.
A lot of people think that the 7PRC should have been the 6.5 case necked up, but someone at Hornady designed it to fit the Tikka T3 action exactly... shame Tikka/Beretta don't agree (they have yet to make a fast-twist 7mm barrel, personally think a 1-8" 7mm08 would be a better prospect)!
Maybe... but just maybe the fact that the 7prc has been around for 2 years (?) contributes towards it not being more widely adopted.
We will know in a few years whether its an actual lemon.
Remember there still are people that thrash the 6.5 creedmor while praising the 6.5 swede...
Would you shoot 180s out of a fast twist 7/08 if u had one?
a good mate has a 6.5costsmore...and I give him shit about it....good natured shit.... he shoots factory fodder and averages 1 shot per deer...all from vechille all under 200 yards... funny thing was he "thought' they were honking along at 4000fps and it shoots really flat...
I did show him proper drop chart for it....
so yip Philipo you are correct that folks buy accurate rifle to shoot factory rounds without hassle..... its a plurry Kimber too..light as hell... I do hope he cleans it better than the poor ruger .44magnum LOL.
The 7prc has been approved by the CIP ( the European SAAMI) since novembre 2023.
My guess is that once the ammo have crossed the Atlantic, notably to Germany and uk, we ll start to see European gunsbeeing manufactured.( if it is not already the case). I remember when the 6.5 prc came out, sauer were the first guns to come out in that caliber on the old continent. They might very well beat beretta again at this game.
I think recoil will handicap the 7PRC when it is finally widely availible here in factory rifles
A 175-180 grain supersonic projectile is quite the handful in a suppressed lightweight hunting rifle, extremely difficult/impossible to spot your shot
A decent brake will fix that problem but we are a suppressor country, not a brake country
Handloading with lighter projectiles will also help, but factory ammo is predominately 175-180 which is the whole point of the 7PRC with its fast twist for the high BC projectiles
When the 300Rum was introduced many moons ago, there were very few brakes & even less suppressors availible here, they sold well but some showed up as new back in the shops a short time later
The factory 180 grain projectiles at 3200fps were quite unpleasant to shoot even in a Remington Sendero which was certainly no lightweight rifle, let alone an LSS which is still heavy by todays standards
We carried suppressed Senderos into back ridge many times
The rums certainly did what they were meant to do, but they used 101-104g of US869 to do it :)
We then went to Titanium’s then Titanium Alaskans with the fluted barrels but Ngamatea and Central North Island Plateau pumice dust and Ti lugs was not the best combo
Your brakes have tamed a lot of lightweights that’s for sure Greg
Until the lips spread, follower tilts when you try and chamber a cartirdge and it wedges the cartridges between the action and magazine.
Hard to clear the jam quickly and I have lost animals due to this.
When Tikka/Beretta want £50 for a new T3x 5 round mag, they can fuck off. I'll pay £65 for a 10 round metal AICS one (binderless) which allows me to adjust the feed lips.
Have any of you guys tried 140 - 150 grainers in ya 7PRC ?
A 140 BT doing 3300 + would be a good flat shooter
A 145 hammer projectile would be mint in the prc.
My saum punches them out a 3230 with no preasure signs so I imagine the prc would be faster
Hahahaha I'm gayer than gay my friend
Funny az looking at Horny's load data for the 7 PRC, she's looking like abit of a dog looks like 180's doing 3000 with R26 is miles away, that's what they're claiming their factory stuff does

3000 is do able in a 22 or 24" barrel I would say as I could get 2900 from a 20"

I have seen that nosler is going to release some 7 prc brass in a few months time.
Would not bother getting too hung up on the ' My rifle must do 3,XXX fps or bust' club.
That's more of a pub/gun club boast than a measure of a rifle.
The 180 ELD-M has very good BC and if you run it between 2,800-2,900 fps your laughing.
The benefit of the PRC is being able to buy factory ammo with good bullets loaded already and barrel with the correct twist, that's it.
Same story with Creedmoor vs 260 Rem. Yes, Remington did the latter first, which still has more case capacity but came with a slow twist barrel and was not loaded from the factory with high-BC bullets.
My 7 Rem Mag is running a 180 ELDM with 64 grains RL26, have not chrono'ed it yet but recoil is relatively mild and accuracy is there, so don't feel the need it step on it any harder, as I want the ADG brass I sourced to last.
The next barrel it gets will be chambered in 7PRC.
As an experiment, I am going to rechamber in 7prc a Remington 700 7rem mag barrel, with the wrong twist, just to see how it perform with factory ammo . I ll still be able to shoot the 162’s if it does not perform with the heavier stuff.
Some tikkas in 243 are now coming with a 1 in 8” twist. And browning are offering some of their x bolts with faster twist as well.
This might explain a few things on Hornady PRC ammo.

I have built a few 7PRC's now that shoot several batches of factory ammo as good or nearly as good as reloads
The velocities are right up there with the shorter barrels, velocities that can't be safely matched with ADI powders
Really comes down to the rifles quality, not to mention the driver of said rifle
Light weight hunting rifles with fast twists, heavy for calibre projectiles & suppressors are extremely difficult to shoot accurately consistently

This might answer some questions around 7PRC
I like the bit about 6.5PRC & Creedmoor. Barrel length has always been a major factor in FPS for .264 & below bores. The 260 (260Imp better still) is probably the most efficient bore to powder ratio of all 6.5 in terms of returns, especially in a hunting rifle. Straying from 7PRC topic but....
Approx 2700fps from my 20" prc
Waiting to try the federal premium apparently they use the rl26 i think it is and is much better speed and accuracy then hornady https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7a71d701fa.jpg

Funny az that no one actually got the point of my initial post
THE 7PRC was meant to be a 3k fps FACTORY set n forget cartridge thats full on bullshit, it's miles slower & not close with hand loads
OK so me "mavage" is only 22" but with a full length can so pretty much up to 24 pressure, I've tried a shit load of different bombs n powder non have got close to the sales pitch - specs
Latest 140 BT's , probably a slow burning powder for these pills but fuk me according to Horns load data these things should be smokin
74g 2225 outta a 22" tube with ba full lenght mag can @ 125 yards
Average 3227fps shot well though, be great for Wallabies & Fallow

Yeah, it's disappointing when the new stuff falls short. Guess sticking with the classics is the safer bet for now.
is the "classics" factory ammo actually achieving advertized velocities? Don't think so...
Well don't write the cartridge off yet. There's apparently an article coming out soon on just that.
Nothing the 7 Rem Mag wouldn't do or the 7saum would with 10 grains less powder and 4 inch shorter barrel!
