Is the new 7mm PRC a lemon ?

US ammunition manufacturers all load pretty conservatively so I’m not surprised that the factory loads don’t always meet expectations. You do need to check what barrel length they quoted the MV in as this will increase the discrepancy in your own barrel, especially if it is shorter than their test barrel.

Looking at the state of the industry and what’s going on around the world you might want to stock up on factory ammo if that’s what you shoot, it’s not getting any cheaper and you can see where the majority of powder is going.

if you reload you will get the best out of any caliber
factory ammo is always slower than advertised I have never seen any example were that isn't the case. and i am not surprised that the 7prc is the same as all the others (100-200fps below advertised)

so, then if you reload in the 7mmprc anyway why not go 7mm rem mag you will get the same out of it with handloads and cheaper more available options for Factory ammo if required as it's a common well-regarded caliber.

i think in usa where factory ammo is cheap "in comparison." and a lot of people still shoot factory ammo. 7prc is a good option..
here in nz are if you are shooting a less common or new caliber you are into firearms (ie its not just a tool for hunting as if it was you would keep it simple)
then you probably reload and if you reload then factory ammo is beside the point

I know that factory ammo is always going to under perform hand loads ( speed, accuracy & in most cases cost ) but the PRC was sold az a caliber that you could shoot with factory ammo in get decent 3000fps performance without the hassle of handloading maybe once Hornady & other manufactures get their shit sorted, not at the mo though.

The other thing I have noticed from this thread is that even with ADI brass & alsorts of fancy powder n bombs it's still a Dog, looks like it's gunna struggle to get 3k with 175's or 180's, remember this isn't 2009 where 162 amaxes @ 3000 was the goal, we must have progressed slightly.


As a comparison, my 30-06 Imp pisses all over the 7 PRC from a medium action sized case

Funny , I remember the 7mm 162 amax of 2003 that would vaporise in mid air when launched from a 7mm weatherby …
Talking about weatherby, with their long freebore, it might be possible to set the 175 and 180 quite a bit out … and maybe duplicate the 7 prc performance ?

a new barrel almost always will speed up 30-100fps depending on the barrel after 100 shots or so. (probably teaching you how to suck eggs)

Ok few fps shy of 3000, could have push it past but don’t mind dropping 50fps for better accuracy, SD ect….

Regarding factory ammo my opinion is Hornady screwed up big time with first batches, their shit brass doesn’t help them especially on magnum. It is to the point it hurts the reputation of this new caliber. We will see 3000 when amo from other manufacturer become available. Federal and Weatherby released some factory amo in the US and it seems to produce better results

Right so re the factory ammo debate


For guys that shoot a hunting rifle, yes it's a great option. Find something it likes, you buy a box - sight it in - go shoot shit !!

Nothing is ever cheap nowadays but even at $6 - 8 a round if it shoots n kills game then Fuk yes how many lets say "Deer" do most people on here "take - as in shoot & recover" a year, I'd say a dozen max, probs lucky if half that. Factory ammo makes great sense & is far more cost effective, lets do a run down on reloading from my perspective

This is ball park BTW, lets say 6.5 PRC per round

Norma brass, fed primer, Horny 143 or god for give a 140BT, ADI powder = at today's Gunworks prices which are very competitive $5.7 - $6 plus your time fucking around prepping & reloading , oh then plus having to go to the range setting up, fuckin around sorting shit, my last was 4.5 hours ffs doing load development

Now I don't mind doing the reloading thing, it does become a pain at times but really if you find decent factory "shooting n killing"
hunting load, go for it boys n girls, might be a little slow but accuracy over brute force any day.

One further point to add.

The PRC series of cartridges was in part designed to cater for those who wished to compete in the the PRS competitions with off the shelf rifles and ammo.

Hornady saw an opportunity in the market and are trying to exploit it.

Time will tell if it is viable or not.

Hmmm - with a few exceptions! The Norma 6.5x285 130 gn Golden Target is specced at 2851, but in my 24" barrel they run at 3120 fps, with very nice accuracy!
