Get a rem mag
Attachment 247654
Get some reloading dies more like it
I haven't got any RL26 ( which seems to be the bizzo with PRC's ) as you know Greg
I was just running 2217 & 2225, I might of tried 2213sc but can't remember, will have to have a look at my data
What's your seating depth? The manufacturers may have deliberately cut the throat a bit shorter to make sure the factory loads were just touching the lands (boosting the chamber pressure).
Case capacity for the 7PRC is 73 grains of water
The rem mag is 75 grains
Well in the case of some of the old firebreathers like the 264 win mag, slower the better.
RL33 is meant to be very good for it.
Maybe that or possibly H1000?
Or is the capacity not quite big enough?
It was always going to be pretty similar to a 7mm rem mag, near identical case capacity as per above, no free lunch.
It’s all about marketing.
I convinced myself I needed one, I really like it but I was never planning on using factory ammo. I’m sure people without a chronograph will think they are awesome.
Shot anything with yours yet Phil?
The best cartridge appears to be anything that likes to burn RL26…
Seems all bold claims about performance these days relies more on the powder than cartridge design. I hope ADI are developing something to help supply the market in this space.
Projectile designs that create lower pressure and allow hotter loads + the right powder for the job is really the only meaningful leap in performance we have seen in the last few years.
Mine shot well with RL26 for a 20" mid 2800fps for the 180grn.
I think the main reason for the cartridge was that the 180grn fits in a standard Tikka mag seated 20thou off the lands
Seems to be a lot of RL 26 about to land.

Yep, you’re bang on RL26 will get you an extra 50 - 150 fps in many calibres. That’s been my experience with 284, 7SAUM & 7RM. The Hornady marketing hype is all focused on their new PRC cartridges…… but truth is the max velocities quoted rely more on the powder than anything else.
So the 7PRC SAAMI max COAL is 3.34” same as 300WM and 28 Nosler.
7mmRemMag is a smidgeon shorter.
300 PRC is 3.7”” same as 338LM meaning it needs a different action which will slow uptake.
No obvious reason why 7PRC should be a lemon. 28 Nosler seems well thought of in the states, so is likely to be its main competition.
Is RL26 what people seem to be preferring for handloading the 7PRC? And is that because it’s getting you that 50-150fps mentioned above ?
I’ve stocked up on H4831sc but wonder if I should be keeping an eye out fo r26
I’m using 2217. Can’t be bothered with aliant powders
I’m shooting a 7prc. 180 ELDMs FED 215M primers over 2217 68.8gr I’m seeing 2970 sd 5 es 7. Shoots 0.307 moa @200m. Proof 24” 1-8 tikka action. Has about 150 rounds though it
I enjoy squeezing my lemon….

Makes you fall right out of bed
Greg Duley has a good article about all of this in the latest NZHunter mag.
I just pulled out some numbers comparing a few of the big 7s.

So we have:
7mm PRC has 50 thou longer COAL than 7mm Rem Mag - probably not a big deal. It's the same as the 28 Nosler and the 30-06 / 270.
7mm PRC has Rim = Base diameter. Rem Mag has a 19 thou belt and 28 Nosler is actually rebated 15 thou.
7mm PRC has the shortest powder chamber and 28 Nosler has the biggest.
7mm PRC has a body taper of 14 thou, Rem Mag is 22 and the Nosler is also 22 thou. The PRC could potentially be a little rougher to feed.
7mm PRC has the longest neck at 287 thou, about 1 bullet diameter. 300 Win Mag is said to be a bit short at 264 thou and the 300 PRC is 308 thou, arguably better.
thats stuffed up.....if the case length is nearly quarter of an inch longer SURELY the cartridge overall length MUST be the same if projectile seated to same depth??? if its not..you not comparing apples with apples
I think the PRC is designed around the 180gn bullets whereas the Rem mag was more about 140/ 160's
Some good info but few things they absolutely do not clarifies or correct:
-the first Hornady batches were loaded way too hot, nothing to do with how clean people clean their bore and variability in custom rifle chambering, this bit of writing sounds like a copy and past of Hornady marketing BS...
-then they got 6 firing of one same Hornady case and this seems enough of a test for them to disregard online reports about Hornady 7prc brass issues. It just shows how inconsistent Hornady brass is, some/a few brass I used were fine with 6 firing, others/most were blowing primer at the third reload.
Been said a few times already, even by Hornady themselves on their podacast:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esxc...yManufacturing
The 7 PRC is NOT :
A competitor to the 7mm STW/28 Nosler/ 7mm Rem Ultra Mag
The 7PRC is:
An 'optimised' 7mm Rem Mag that would be loaded long to the confines of a Rem 700 L/A magazine (all the way out to about 3.6" instead of 3.2" SAAMI) but within the confines of a Tikka T3 magazine (about 3.34"), stuff that you can buy off the shelf vs handloading.
Another essential, is that factory rifles come with the correct twist rate out of the box.
The fact that Hornady has three different lengths of PRC cartridges is interesting.

Winchester tried a similar family of cartridges with their WSM and WSSM lines, which apart from the 300 WSM, went out a while ago.
Arguably the RSAUM was the predecessor to the 6.5 PRC... the fact that ADG is offering the 6.5-7 PRC AW as component brass speaks volumes.
However, all this debate has failed to refocus on the part that matters, which is the BULLET!
The 180 ELDM would do fine for most in anything from a 7mmBR, 7mm08, 7X57, 280 Rem, 280AI etc... so long as your barrel and action can fit it.
You also have to be aware that Hornady is a major sponsor of Nz Hunter.
Those have had anything to with magazine tech/gear reports will be aware that even if something is a turd no one will say it.
Need to be clear this is not a go at the Duleys they do more good for nz hunting than anyone else
