it's like saying that having a drivers licence is fine but having to register your car is some sort of orwellian nightmare.

Ok I will firmly place a tinfoil hat on and answer that. You register your 6 firearms today. Next week they decide you only allowed 3 they now know you have 3 too many. Or you register your 15 no issues until they decide you need to pay $100 per year per firearm.
