Bugger I was looking at a 44 Rossi. What were the bad points? I just don't have the cash for the Marlin.

There is also the Mossberg 464, not sure of price and haven't even handled one to date. Seen a few reviews on youtube, but it seems to have a lever safety (plus the normal safety) as well so you need to keep a firm grip on the the lever up and into the stock to allow the trigger to activate. A bit overkill maybe? Anyone used one?

Well the first one didn't work(wouldn't feed) and the second one wasn't a whole lot better. I shot one billy and one hare with it and got rid of it.

Chances are you are looking at the Rossi '92 in 44mag (92 Winchester copy). In 30-30 It's probably the Rio Grande (Marlin copy) wich a friend just bought a near new one that jammed solid on the second shot. Probably be ok with a bit of tweaking.

Apart from a Marlin I also have a 357 Rossi '92 carbine. The older models seam pretty good. My one has a very short length of pull, the foresight is also too short, the loading gate sometimes pops out the side, on 38s with certain projectiles the lifter sometimes catches and it has kind of a lame hammer safety. On the up side with the right ammo, the action cycles nice and fast, groups very well and with 357mag ammo it would be quite an acceptable zombie apocalypse rifle.
