    New (to me) chambering

I was feeling the hankering for a new cartridge to shoot. Something light recoiling, fast and deer capable.
Was looking at 6mm rem AI and 243ai. Of these the 243 appealed more due to brass and reamer availability. Still, AI brass forming faff.
Next, I was looking at 6-284 and 6-06. These had easy speed I was looking for though case prep more complicated and need to buy a reamer.

During this I kept referring back to the 25-06 that nicely met my goals at normal hunting ranges and found a lightly used screw in barrel to boot. 25-06 shooting 100gr speer hot cor at around 3300fps will be unleashed soon.

Awesome. Always liked the derivatives from military cartridges. Would love a 22- or 25-303.

Always the issue of throat errosion when burning a big column of podwer behind a little pill but for a hunting gun, alls goods.

Really impressed with my 6.5 06
Wide range of 6.5 projectiles available and no shortage of 25 06 cases. 1:8 twist barrel will shoot 130 - 143 gr projectiles out to 2850 - 2900 fps and flatten anything you can find to shoot at.
Used to be a died-in-the-hole .270 fan, but have lost nothing to the 6.5 06

Yes, 6.5-06 might be on my play list another time. Currently have a 7x64 that fills that spot. Tbh a lot of these cartridges overlap in performance and comes down to personal whimsy. Gives us something to do.

Hornady and Berger have both recently released new high BC match and hunting 25cal projectiles, would need to check if the twist rate worked ok though.

The 25 Creedmoor is proving to be a popular round in the USA but for hunting a 25-06 with 133gr high BC bullets doing 3100-3200fps would be a pretty exceptional cartrisge.

    Greetings,
For some reason, that I am unable to explain, my shelves hold dies for both the .257 Roberts and .25-06 in spite of me never have owned a .25 calibre rifle. Still we don't know what the future holds and you just never know.

Yep, won't be for the 10 twist. Maybe look at a 7.5 or 8 twist when I get a few more shekels together. I think vulcan barrels or Hugh Bradley can make whatever twist suits.

2506 is a very capable caliber for nz hunting out to 300yds. I’ve had a couple in the past, when came time to re-barrel I stepped it up to 6506ai. That’s a whole different ball game. 140 AMAX running at 2980 fps.

I have had 2 of them and rate it as a cartridge for smaller game up to fallow. I experienced a number of delayed kills on big reds and lost a huge one. Ultimately went to .284 Win for a catch all NZ cartridge.

My last one liked 100 and 115 Nosler BTs, 117 Hornady SSTs and 100 TTSX. 100 BTs caused huge meat damage at anything under 200m but much less with the 115s.

Factory twists are too slow for anything past 120 grains.

    Enjoy yours.

the 90grn sierra gamechangers go well....the rifle I got off forum for one mate, that now resides in anothers mates cabinet shoots stupidly well for its age and has made some spectacular kills on wallabies..the fallow stag it was pointed at in shitty conditions just fell over deader than a dead thing too.

    Do you have the reamer?
