New rifle for goat control/sons first rifle

Been awhile since I've posted here, had to rub the cobwebs off with this post which I know should attract interest, so her indoors has given me the green light for a new boom stick, I'm feeling the 223 as it'll be used to shoot goats etc and sons first gun, so it needs to last, be good quality, not blued, set trigger or even if there are triggers avaliable, it'll be suppressed, and what optic would you go with? Thanks in advance

Whats the budget? I mean... Tikka Hunter comes to mind.... Smooth.... DPT Modular can....

As far as Optics... probably Bushnell 3-9 0r 4-12 or similar until he gets into the swing of things...

When I get around to it I'll probably get another Howa flute the story off the barrel, carbon fiber stock but most important reason or it being howa you can get 10 round mags which will be good for the larger mobs

223 is a good choice but you could always go to a 243. Least that way you can keep it for years and your son can still use it as his main rifle for deer and big stags . No recoil, easy to shoot and knocks anything over out to a certain point. Otherwise a 223 is still good to keep for the goats etc(deer) and move up to something bigger, esp if he tends to shoot longer range later on if he gets into the hunting thing. My first rifle was a open sight 303 then moved to a 243 for goats. Years later still have a 243 as my main rifle and its my main deerrifle now and it works a treat.

    Don't see why, I started with a ruger 10/22.
Pistol grip help keep it pointed in the right direction so safer that a old school stock. Can actually use the safety east unlike most old school rifles.
If you just being anti semi auto then wind the gas system off to make it manually operated.

    I stand by the idea

Just because it says ar doesn't make it unsuitable he did say goats quick follow up shots a sinle shot bakail would be just as likely to be a mistake waiting to happen if not supervised correctly (just my option mt daughter uses both my tikka and ar under strict supervision) no more having reminder her about saftey from one to other

SKS for a cheap first Goat killer. If I had a son or daughter I would most likely go for something in the 223 range like the mini 14

Cheers for the comments, budget I'd be looking for around the 2k max mark, I feel the dpt suppressor would be the one as I have one on my other rifle and like it a lot, I would like it to be bolt action not semi although a ar15 would be nice, I feel after today it'll be a cz527 Or a tikka t3 hunter but also would like a stainless synthetic set up

A Tikka T3 stainless will do the trick. A Burris 3-9 and a dpt can and you will have a great set up that's nice and lightweight for the young fella.
I'd probably stick with 223 as it easily takes goats and feed it Hornady practice ammo which is extremely accurate and pretty cheap.

I would go .223 also - was my first cal and I shot anything from rabbits to deer. Its half the price of most other centerfire cals too.
+1 on the Hornady Training ammo. As for optics, well that depends how much you have left over after you get the rifle. As for rifle, anything around or over 1k is most likely quality in my opinion

    I agree

Ditch the scope, teach him to shoot properly with irons.
