Yep, the wood stocked Sako quads are really nice. I have the varmint model in 22LR. Looks like your one is a bit more accurate than mine though @rossi.45

I have several sub 2" groups at 200m with mine but I do have what looks to be velocity fliers occasionally. Shots that turn up high or low with no reason at extended distances (past 100m). I am trying to find the cause of this at the moment.

Longest kill to date with my sako quad varmint in 22LR was 207m on a magpie.
gadgetman, Tikka7mm08, GWH and 1 others like this.

All of the ammunition lots Iv put over a reliable chrony have showen poor ES. The current lot of cci subs are in the 40-50 fps range so vertical spread is inevitable at any decent distance. The RWS target Im using at present is better but still not good. Ill try some higher grade match ammo next order, R50 or top end ely
Are you sorting on rim thickness or lenght etc to try and improve it?

I have tried R50 and Eley Black. I settled on Norma Jaktmatch based on a combination of longer range accuracy and price. I am getting into sorting by rim thickness now and saw some cool results with the Norma - 10 shot sub MOA at 120m. But the rim thickness testing ahs also brought into question my decision to go with the Norma in the first place so i am back to testing some Lapua ammunition as well. Just need another day to do some longer range accuracy testing and try them over the Magnetospeed.

Did the R50 perform? I tried the RWS Match. Groups are very good but the same velocity spread issues.
Id be interested in your lapua results.

I wrote a big reply detailing a bunch of testing I have been doing. Then though most people would be bored by it so I deleted it. Bottom line was that the R50 shot great at 50m and 100m. The velocity consistency over a 10 shot string measured with a magnetospeed V3 was as good as anything else I have tried.

The reasons why I am not using R50 is that the accuracy at 200m wasn't as good as the Norma, SK Match and Lapua Polar Biathlon. Of course in your rifle you might get different results....

@Gillie what kind of accuracy are you getting at 200m? I know wind will play a huge factor, but what is the best groups you can reliably shoot?
Whilst my 22 is good under 100m once I get out to 150-200m it's basically shooting 200mm groups.

    Cheers,
Seems counter intuitive ? any idea what was going on with the 200m groups?

I've recently bought a Sako Finnfire 2, which has a wood stock and is identical to a quad except the barrel change screw has been covered over. It's not really a beautiful rifle, just nice to use and does the job without thinking about it.
With plastic trigger guard, magazine and bolt shroud, its build philosophy is more like the Sako A7 or Tikka than the Sako 85. For unknown reason, the bolt release is on the other side too.
Like Gillie, I've found a lot of ammo gives vertical strung out groups. Eley Match (black), old Tenex and R50 give circular groups and are acceptable at 50m. (under 1MOA). Several other brands like orange RWS Target, Eley Subsonic (green, hollowpoint) and the 42 Gr Winc Subsonic shoot OK at 25 yd but not at 50.
However, my scores on target are now consistently better than I could get with the old well polished JW15, accurate as it was.

Does anyone know where you can get aftermarket metal bits for the Finnfire / Quad ?
