Nikon Buckmaster? Anyone have the 4.5-14

Hi All,

Long time no post haha

I have just purchased a 308 in Missouri as my first USA boomstick. Going to be a deer and coyote rifle the latter out to 400 yards.

Have always been a Leupold fan but need to be able to dial for the 'yotes and my budget wont stretch at the moment. I hope that eventually I will get a VX3 with CDS for it.

In the mean time have found a Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 SF for 200USD which is a good deal as they are discontinued and were $339? I think.

Its down to this or a Vortex Diamondback which I had in NZ and liked...

Can anyone offer some suggestions

I have the Nikon Coyote Special 4.5-14x40 which I think is essentially the same as the buckmasters, apart from the reticle. Haven't used it a lot yet but so far I like it - nice glass, seems reliable and well constructed.

Had a play with one at the range, they don't feel nearly as well made and the glass is nowhere as good as the monarch which is not much more money new. The monarch dials really well too.
Having said that it is probably not a bad bet for $200.

Watch out for those riots!

So it arrived. An unfortunately I didn't get the discount those in Ferguson Missouri got. But the deals online this time of year are awesome.

First impressions are that at the price it is a bargain. The only scope I have to compare it to is a Leupold VX1 and the Nikon is far clearer. I am glad I went for the Nikoplex (standard) reticle and I am glad I did as I hear the BDC is thick. For coyotes and raccoons etc I think this reticule is thin enough out to 400 yards. Time will tell if 4.5x is going to be low enough for deer in this neck of the woods. If not I will just go buy a 30-30 as they are dirt cheap here and leave the iron sights on it for hunting in the woods.

I will post a pic when I get around to trying it out on some coyotes.
