Thread: Nikon P1000 vs Spotter and digiscope

Anyone had a decent play with one of these new Nikon's? They are supposed to have the equivalent of 60x optical zoom so up there zoom wise with most spotters. Looking at upgrading my Ventana and wondering if this is an option?

For carrying around the hill and accessing animals I would go with the camera. Lighter and less expensive than a good quality spotting scope.
You can also takes photos and video on it.

Think they have a bit more optical zoom than 60x

Here is a recent pic of a bull taken on 65x zoom from an sx60.
Its not the original as its been cropped etc.
Again it could be my poor skills but was taken with a remote button off a good tripod on a calm day.

This is obviously a ripper bull no doubt but you can suss that with just the binos. Different situations you encounter on the hill it is my opinion a decent spotter will always come out on top.

Not much over 600 iirc. Was January and I should have mentioned cloud was moving in and out so a bit of fog could be blamed as well

They claim 125x but a they have a different start point than a spotter from what I understand. A spotting scope assumes your naked eye is the baseline, about a 50mm lense whereas alot of cameras rate zoom from a 24mm meaning the labeled zoom is not directly comparable eg 60x50mm vs 60x24mm. I'm not sure if that's exactly how it works but hopefully you get the idea. I'm not an expert but this is just the jist I have picked up from my research, open to being corrected.

I use a canon sx60 zoom is really good photos and video it’s all I need at a fraction of the price even with a good tripod

Can’t help with specific models but I have a Nikon P900 and highly rate it. Awesome zoom and just a good piece of kit. Recommend.

Panasonic Lumix FZ-80 is well worth a look as well.
