Thread: No more rusty firearms

Is your rifle showing signs of rust? Does it rust during a hunting trip?
Well, I've got a late model Rem 700 in 6.5 CM that 'attracts' rust.
You see, Remington in all their cost-cutting glory, put on a surface/finish bluing that is destined to rust. It is rough, thinly applied, almost porous and starts to rust when subjected to any moisture despite any oil application I have put on it (except lithium grease and Valvoline Tectyl 506).

I have been fighting this ongoing rust problem for a couple of years and I've finally given up. End of last year I stumbled on the solution (you won't find this method on the internet). I degreased the barrel and action and then applied some 'Penetrol' to all the outside metalwork. Now, this is not a 'paint' but a clear oil-based rust-preventing primer/sealer and it seems that very few know about it.

It's not only great on metalwork but I've restored many faded wooden furniture with Penetrol, as it will penetrate, cure and stabilize most woods short of the most highly resinous tropicals. So there is no downside to using this product on the rifle metalwork and getting it on the wooden rifle stock.

It was designed as a paint conditioner that was targeted toward painters/brush applicators wanting a 'wet edge' extender for better flow and handling. But Penetrol also turned out to be great at preventing rust, corrosion, and oxidization. And it works.....6 months since I used it and my Rem 700 has had no sign of rust and I do not need to apply a coating of oil when in the safe.

@Hermitage I might try some on a part of one of my machines to see if it stops condensation from rusting them during this wet winter

It is perfect for that. My firearms get condensation over them during these winter months when stored in my gun safe (in a motorhome with no power for a dehumidifier). This stuff holds the rust back even if condensation is running down the barrels.

Cheers mate, I got a 700 that likes to rust as well. Went to buy some but they won’t deliver here, have to get some next time I’m in palmy.

Does it dry once on the surface, or stay wet? And does it smell?

Yeah it dries to a hard clear rust-resistant film on the rifle barrel which also gives it a little bit of gloss. I can compare it to an automotive clear-coat but Penetrol is tougher on the surface as it supposedly penetrates into the metal.
It has no smell.
Maybe I can get away with calling it the 'poor man's' cerokote?

Keep a close eye on the inside of the barrel if thats happening

What do you do to prep the rifle?

Just use degreaser on all metal parts.
I applied it over the original shit Remington bluing and it works well.
However, if you have good deep bluing on your rifle barrel then I'm not sure how it will go (but should be ok).

Sounds impressive. Any idea how effective it would be for male pattern baldness?

Yeah this stuff is like duct tape or number 8 wire....lots of uses.

So for male pattern baldness just rub it 3x into your scrotum for 3 days. It's guaranteed to damage your testosterone production hence allowing your hair to grow again (although your voice takes on a higher pitch)...

When l was guiding in the UK ,l got to know a few of the old Game Keepers on large estates many who came down from long lines of Market Shooters which l have always found fascinating ( born in the wrong era ,wishful thinking & all that ).

Those old blokes hunted the salt marshes & flats in terrible conditions & would coat the guns metal with 3 parts boiled linseed oil & 1 part Turps ,when we lived & hunted the Arafura Swamp in Arnhem Land, which was both salt encrusted & humid, where we hunted the sky blackening flocks of geese & ducks (so lots of monsoonal down pours,heat,sweat & wet & bloody hands all over guns for extended times) l used the same ,you apply it in a number of coats & it sets like a varnish, worked very well .

Later when Lanotec (lanolin oil)became freely available in the large containers, l also used it applied like the Romans would do with their swords ,where the metal is heated up & coated ie left in sun, near fire etc & then multiple coats applied & allowed to soak in , also did it with our Quads & Bull catchers that were running over & through salt swamps,creeks, flats & beaches ,worked really well in probably some of the harshest environments in the world.

Being a old busted ass Shearer l also liked the smell, reminds me, l might put a couple of dabs behind the missus ears tonight
