Thread: Norinco NHM90 question

Hello, this is my first post on nzhuntingandshooting.

I am looking into purchasing an AK (or at least the closest thing possible in NZ) and the only two weapons I could find were the Norinco NHM-90 and the Saiga series rifles. I know that the Saiga only takes Saiga magazines, and that high capacity magazines are next to impossible to purchase. My NHM question is whether or not it will accept standard AK magazines.

You can modify the Saiga in 7.62x39 to accept standard AK mags but it requires some replacement parts which may be difficult to get.

Of course not! I plan on pinning any high capacity magazines down to 7-rounds. I just like the look of the banana magazines. Thank you for your warm welcome, and your response. I was leaning towards the NHM90 anyway; the Saiga rifles appear to have far too much plastic on them.

EDIT: I should have mentioned that I am considering applying for an E-endorsement. Sorry guys.

Dude you need to school yourself up on what a mssa is & what is not. No "banana" mag for you sorry. If it looks like it holds more than 7 rounds its no go.

The law states that any rifle with a magazine with greater than 7 rounds, or one that appears to hold more than 10 rounds, has to be registered as an MSSA.

As others have mentioned, welcome to the forum, but please read the arms code in regards to magazine capacity on an A-Cat semi auto (centre fire), capacity and appearance.
In fact, Spiker is a font of knowledge when it comes to MSSAs and was offering some good advice.

Hey Mouser,
Not sure if you are aware, but the Saigas are genuine AK's (just sporterised versions) made in the Izhmash factory in Russia (if I'm not mistaken). One of them will set you back about $800

The Norinco's are obviously Chinese but they have a thicker receiver (again if I'm not mistaken) etc and are built like a tank (so even more rugged than your average run of the mill eastern bloc knockoffs). I've shot a few of them now. The wooden handled one was crap, it's not even shaped for a human hand, but the Dragunov stocked ones I got to shoot seemed to have a fantastic light trigger and were just a hell of a lot of fun. These are a tad more, I think about $1,200-$1,400 depending on the stock choice.

It all depends on what you want to use it for. Just don't do anything silly like pinning magazines down to 7 rounds! The rest of us already have a hard time trying to be allowed to legally own guns like that.
