    Not another what rifle thread

So another wet day and the brain doesnt go into stop thinking mode. Got a barrel in the swap section. Had a rem600 sitting around in 243 tried a few things with it but Im pretty sure the barrel is past its use by date. What are the cartridges that can be used in this action using existing bolt face. One option could be a fast twist 243. Me liking stuff thats not fashionable and a little bit odd ball was also thinking a fast twist 22 250 or a 257r do these 2 go in a short action or possibly a 260 but I already have enough 6.5s? Any other ideas?

22-250 or 243 are safe, like plenty of brass and stuff. I have found the more esoteric the cartridge the harder it is to find consumables in times of 'insert appropriate reason here; take your pick, Supply chain, Plandemic, Economic etc etc'. If the cartridge can be formed from a common parent no issue, but are projectiles easily obtainable. If it is a bit of an oddball can I stockpile enough now for lean times etc etc. Can I get the powder it shoots well easily........

Fast twist 243, will do everything, pest explosions at 4000fps to red stags with 105-115gr pills.
Well maybe not sure a 55-58gr fast pill in a fast twist barrel at mac 3.5 is a good idea, dont want it coming apart in your silencer.

Is the 600 action short like an M7 action, or short like a regular M700 action? Will determine what pills you can use - Rem 700 short came out with 6mm Rem, but the heavier high bc pills wind up single feed. Regular 9.25 rem barrel will let you run 105's fine - run it as a .243 with 105's and be surprised at the "thump". I just happen to know where a good Model 7 rem .243 barrel is......

Im not exactly sure on action length. Im not familiar with a rem 700. How do you measure them? Id be happy keeping it 243 as I like the cal.

    How odd ball?
220 swift, 243wssm, 223wssm would be strong contenders for very oddball.

25-08 would be oddball but still easy to get dies and brass for. 243AI in a 1:8 twist would go great if you don't mind fire forming.

6-284 or 25-284 would be great if you want to be a bit oddball and want to replace the barrel again soon.

If you want to go way out there a 1:8 twist 25-303 would give great performance.

How about a .22 Creedmoor. That would fit the 600 action and the .473 bolt face.

I prefer old school cals. At the moment I have 22 k hornet, 22 hornet x2, 223 which I want to move on, 243, 6.5x55 x3, 6.5 grendel youngest in the pack, 6.5 06, and 3x 303s that I want to move on as well. 220 swift is another interesting one. 25 303 is old school but id need a different action for that I think

The 600 is the grandad of the Model Seven. I think it has a slightly shorter action than the short action 700. The Model Seven has a shorter action too.

    My 2c re caliber

I am not sure the .220 swift would work (length and bolt face compatibility), but the 22-250 would work and would fill the gap left behind after you divest of your .223.

Having a .25 anything is a bit obsolete if you already have x5 6.5cal rifles in hand

The other .473 bolt face option to throw in the mix could be a .358 Winchester. If you feel like your collection lacks a heavy caliber. .358 would fill the gap and suit a small compact rifle like the 600 well.
