    NZ Wide Ammunition Shortage??

Has anyone else been having difficulty finding ammo in stores of late? Have discussed with some retailers and they are finding it difficult to get ammo in due to high demand where some countries are stock pilling. Is this the case due to covid or are we seeing restrictions put in place on how much ammo is able to be brought into the country?

Definitely! I would be interested to know how long we are likely to see this shortage for and the roll over effects. I should imagine things will settle in good time and return to normal. Very interesting though.

Yes. Everyone should go out and panic buy. Make sure you get some toilet paper too.

*#@**. That's terrible. I'm sure their new shipment hasn't arrived yet so someone is taking the piss.

i haven't been able to get the federal 338 I use for three odd months now and they can't tell me when more is due. don't have any issue with the hornady rounds I use in other calibres though, and the price doesn't appear to have changed.

Maybe taking advantage of the situation, both stores I frequent told the same story, one was actually unpacking their shipment while I was there. Probably was paid for and shipped early this year before the $'s downward spiral, then been in customs for months increasing in value daily.

You should report that price gouging to the govt

If it's coming out of the USA, forget it, except for perhaps hunting oriented ammo.

One cheeky online vendor in the USA marked S&B 9mm ammo, a box of 50, up to $253 a box. I was buying it last year for $8.50 a box.

Anything that could be seen as self defense or target ammo is getting hoovered up. A pallet of ammo will land at a gun store and people will be waiting to grab what they can. 20000 rounds will get sold in an hour. If you go to any big box outdoor store like Cabelas it gets sold even faster than that.

Because of that people who reload or decided to start reloading, they started buying up all the components, primers, powder, bullets and brass so that is all going scarce too.

Also because the USA is such a lucrative market right now I'd expect plenty of the Euro and Russian manufacturers to be sending ammo to the USA.

Do you really think this Govt would care if we pay more for our sport and they get more GST coming their way, thought the oil companies were getting sorted, that seems to have died a natural death.

Maybe, just maybe, connected with a FB post by Victoria O Brien, New Conservatives, that she has been reliably informed the next buyback is to include semi shotties and bolt actions above .300WMR.

The rumour is not true or should I say it's facearse bullshit. Just received the message below -

    "Dear SSANZ Members,

You may have heard about this rumour circulating on Facebook:
I have just been very reliably informed that the new employees for the next set of confiscation events have been instructed that along with the pump action rifles that have already been banned, the following will be included:

    1 Semi-automatic shotguns
    2. Bolt-action rifles of calibres greater than 300 Win. Mag.

Never think your firearm is not going to be affected. It will. Just give this government time.

COLFO has sought confirmation from Police and received this reply:

The post is incorrect on both points. Section 2A of the Arms Act, as shown below, makes it clear what impact there is:

    1. Semi-automatic shotguns (yellow highlight) and these have already been dealt with in the first buy-back.
    2. You will not see any reference below to a bolt action calibre.

Arms Act 1983 No 44 (as at 25 June 2020), Public Act 2A Meaning of prohibited firearm – New Zealand Legislation

    2AMeaning of prohibited firearm
    (1) In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, prohibited firearm—

    (a) means any of the following firearms:
    (i) a semi-automatic firearm, other than—
    (A) a specified semi-automatic firearm:
    (B) a semi-automatic shotgun with a non-detachable tubular magazine or magazines that are capable of holding no more than 5 cartridges commensurate with that firearm’s chamber size:
    (C) a small semi-automatic pistol:
    (D) a semi-automatic pistol (not being a small semi-automatic pistol) in the possession or under the control of a person referred to in subsection (3):
(ii) a pump-action shotgun that is capable of being used with a detachable magazine:
(iii) a pump-action shotgun that has a non-detachable tubular magazine or magazines that are capable of holding more than 5 cartridges commensurate with that firearm’s chamber size:
(iv) a centrefire pump-action rifle that is capable of being used with a detachable magazine:
    (v) a centrefire pump-action rifle that has 1 or more non-detachable magazines (tubular or otherwise) that are capable of holding more than 10 cartridges commensurate with that firearm’s chamber size; and
    (b) includes any other firearm declared by Order in Council made under section 74A to be a prohibited firearm for the purposes of this Act.

    (2) In subsection (1)(a)(i)(A), specified semi-automatic firearm means a semi-automatic firearm—

    (a) that is capable of firing only 0.22 calibre or lower rimfire cartridges; and
    (b) that has a magazine, whether or not detachable or otherwise externally fed, that is capable of holding no more than 10 cartridges commensurate with the firearm’s chamber size; and
    (c) that does not have a lower receiver that is able to be attached to a centrefire upper receiver so as to result in a firearm that is able to function. "

I have seen plenty of ammo both local and in covid town when up there last week, some stuff is getting low like Lapua cases.
A lot of it is also just the seasonal yin and yang we have for not being our own producer, bring back CAC!
Bought the last 10,000 SRP's too! while up there
