Ok so you can shorten a 270 what about

A 280 AI and the mighty 30-06 both these two would work as they have at least the same or similar capacity to the 270 . The 30-06 would give you full power 308 performance with at least 6 inches removed if you work on 30fps per inch of barrel and the 280ai would in theory end you up at 280/284 performance again with 30fps per inch of barrel removed .Assuming your starting with a 24 inch tube .Factory ammo is available for both along with a huge range of projectiles . Granted both like the 270 are long actions but used in a tikka it doesn't matter as the short cartridges like the 308 using that action are still the same . So why not these two? and you could even add the 25-06 just for fun .I think the 280ai might just be the perfect balance of power/and performance with out getting into magnum territory . What do you think ??

Welllll you could but how much power do you need in a bush gun? A short 308 will still do over 300y no problems

Large actions, large powder burning cartridges (esp 25-06)...
I reckon a 6.5 Creedmoor in a short-barrelled suppressed rifle would be the go.

But then it raises the question: Why do you need an ultra short-barrelled rifle if you are shooting out to 600yards? Generally for those types of shots, you are not in thick enough bush to warrant a short barrel rifle. A standard 22" with a fitted suppressor would be fine.

    Hmm, an 18" 30/06 in a T3 would be a fine rifle.

    Question is why?
If you have the rifle already, then fine.
Otherwise why buy a calibre (with a longer action) that generally needs more powder to do its thing.
270 is a bit of an odd one as there isnt really a common 308 based equivalent.
It's why the 284 works for the 7mm
Shorter and fatter case so loses bugger all.

Longer action means longer overall length unless you own a tikka

Yes the 284 works but but it only shines in a Tikka ,it is not at its best in a true short action with heavy high bc bullets as you cant seat them out far enough to utilize its full potential. Given that a lot of these type of rifles are built on Tikka's your using a long action anyway so why not use the action length to the maximum advantage and use a longer case with more capacity.

    After having a good play with a 18 inch 270 I wouldn’t go below 20”
Got ok speed with the 145 eld’s but having to load it hotter than what I would like
And while accuracy was certainly Acceptable the sd is massive in the 50’s

Going to have another play with the gun (its a mates)
Certainly shoots good enough for him with his use’s at the moment
But I would like to have another play
Maybe switch to a Extruded powder rather than ball
