Thread: One gun?

Guys without starting a dick fight I'd like some opinions, I no this has kinda been done before but.....
We have recently started a casual guiding business on the farm, and has sort of got me thinking, some people have not shot a gun before so I cant really give them the edge, similarly I'd rather a 243 pill wasn't poked in the wrong spot to put a first timer off.
So if you had pic a caliber to shoot 0-500
For arguments sake the 500 is in perfect conditions, most shots under 400,that anyone could shoot what would it be?
What glass would it wear and would it have can?

Keep in mind that anyone needs to able to shoot it comfortably.

What sort of shooting BRADS? Bush stalking? Bush edge stalking? Prone supported? Is all the shooting supervised by yourself?

I'd be thinking a 308, 6.5 or 260. With a can and a decent dial able scope and as long as someone experienced is there it will be lights out.

If it was me I would probably go with something like a 284Winchester, 20" barrel and something with a bit of weight in the rifle (8-9lb weight). Put a suppressor on it and keep the balance about the action or slightly forward. Maybe run a couple of different projectiles depending on the situation and person you are guiding. Scope it with something with good eye relief and also a generous eye box.

Can definitely . 30 mm tube on scope. Side focus and 50 mm front objective . (Mind you that's to suit my eyesight )

You would need to hand load a 6.5x55.

I reckon for guiding, a 30.06 (or 308).

Probably a 30.06 with a 150-165 bullet. 7lb all up. 22" barrel. Suppressor. Its a no fuss calibre that gives no dramas; loads and extracts with its slow taper and long case beautifully. Kill anything. 2-12 VX6 with ballistic CDS on top and you are done for all occasions. Keep it simple. A bog standard A7 stainless would be nice. Maybe stick a carbon stock on it.

As it would be your rifle.
Any of 6.5x55, 260. 7mm-08, 270, 30 06, all suppressed and handloaded unless you strike that magical factory load.
Scope as mentioned by tahr would be very suitable on any of the above I suggest
I wouldn't choose the 308, not because it is incapable at that distance, it certainly is, but it is just I think the others will be more capable for a novice shooter once past 350 odd to your 500 or so with the correct bullet. Then again if you are making the corrections for your client it may make not difference.
I just think the least variables the more success your clients will have.

I've got a 6.5 I can bring down and we can try it out? I'm old and infirm so just the Guinea pig you need? I could bring @Woody cause he shoots worse than me with a not to accurate 30-06 and I could pickup that crappy Sako as well? Between Xmas and New year would fit in?

If carrying weight isn't an issue then something a bit heavier will help reduce the recoil. I'd say a 6.5 of some sort, especially 6.5x55 if factory ammo was for some reason a requirement.

My 260 is pretty lightweight so jumps around a lot on recoil, hence my mention of weight. Again if weight is of little concern then definitely put a suppressor on it.

Rifle make and scope what ever flavor you please.
