Optic for Ruger 77/44 pig gun

What do I need fellas?

Rifle has had a cheap Bushnell red dot that wouldn’t switch off, and then got smacked. New optic needs to be mega tough because it’s gonna get a very hard time. Anything that will get caught up in scrub and native will be a problem.

Rifle is used for short range 2-10m bailed pigs, killing stock, horses etc. Shoots my hand loaded 280gr subsonics.

Budget up to about $1000 for a straight red dot. The idea of a laser is appealing, to shoot pigs under logs or in big holes in real tight crap, which happens quite often, but haven’t found anything non-cheapshit Chinese that is red dot and has a laser. Rifle is bog standard 77 plastic stock. Not easy to see where I’d mount another rail.

It’s got to be near unbreakable.

Irons with glow in the dark paint

With a vxr you get a lifetime warranty
I adore my 2-7 but the 1-4 would probably suit better
Simple dot seems far better on pigs than the "pig plex" in my use when they are standing still

2-10mtrs irons all day long.....those ghost ring apertures on rugers look great,fibre optic option better still as perfect in low light.

I'm like a broken record on the vxrs as I'd have one on my 77/44 in a second if I could justify the spend, but my 77/44 wears a plane old vx1 3-9x40 Lr duplex that suits its subsonic trajectory to lob them with confidence out to 75m with pretty deadly accuracy. And they can take a solid beating from my experience running them for years hard and never loosing zero

And again irons, lowest profile, least likely to get caught up in supple jack etc point and shoot. The fibre optic front and a ghost ring option is a bloody good one.

I have always stuck with open sights on pig hunting rifles so I can see where the dogs are.

Did you have a trs25 on it?i have used them a lot and for the price they are hard to kill.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Open sights is a problem because of the suppressor. The suppressor is required, as the use of subsonics has massively improved the shot at the bail, as some dogs simply cannot tolerate full power muzzle blast and have the instinct to flee the gun when it is raised. Currently investigating Trijicon RMR type sights.

what are you using for your subsonic load?

I cant hit anything with irons to the point where its embarrassing, but give me a red dot and ill be on every time.

270gr hollow point cast lead, AP70N, Starline brass.

It’s a very “flattening” combination, hammers big pigs.

What about a set of "flip up" open sights, such as were found on a lot of AR15s back in the good old days. You can see over suppresor with them and they're extremely resilient against damage, no batteries to rely on. At 2-10m you only need a very short sight radius so just mount a longish rail on your rifle and mount the sights 6" apart and you're in business
These are the sights that came with my Sig516 (ah.. the memories..) they're all steel construction unlike the magpul etc equivalents, you can choose differentfront/rear combinations, V and blade, post and ring etc. I reckon they'd go good in your situation
