Has this changed again?
Has anyone had a scope come through in the last few months, weeks.
Seems to be some confusion on this issue again.

I’ve had three sent in from overseas this year.
No problems.
However, if you are trying to export from the US you may well run into problems as some of the companies that were sending them will no longer do so as USPS has stopped shipping to our region.
Just...say...the...word
Yep no permit needed
Its only confusing if you fuss. Just order, pay and wait.
The only thing that will get in your way is what Flyblown said, some retailers who used to export don't anymore because of freight costs and associated issues. CameralandNY being an example.
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

I just looked at the documentation the police sent me last month as I had applied for some mags etc to be imported so I put a scope on the application, they refused the scope .
There reply: The item in question is not considered to be part pursuant to section 2 of the Arms Act 1983 and such, there is no requirement to obtain a a permit to import for this item.
Happy Day's
Do we have a bit of a list of store in the US that will still ship to nz? @Flyblown who did you use?

After talking to NZ Customs today via phone I can confirm that it is still legal to import a scope without a permit, either in the post or in your luggage.
There was a time when a permit was required in 2019 but that was overturned shortly there after. The bloke, David, at customs was very thorough and helpful. He is the man who deals with firearm permits on a day to day basis for customs and apologies for some misleading info on the customs website that incorrectly states a scope as being a gun “part”. It just hasn’t been corrected.

Reply I got when I asked about importing a set of open sights for one of my antique rifles
Thank you for your email.
Sights, scopes and the like do not meet the interpretation of a ‘part’ under Section 2 of the Arms Act 1983 and therefore no permit is required to import these into New Zealand.
Section 2 – Interpretation
part, in relation to any firearm or restricted weapon,—
(a) means—
(i) any component that, of itself, is essential to the discharge of any shot, bullet, missile, or other projectile from the firearm or restricted weapon; and
(ii) any component that is exclusively designed to be, or is intended to be, an integral part of the firearm or restricted weapon (for example, a butt, stock, magazine, or other component that feeds or contributes to feeding ammunition to the firearm or restricted weapon); and
(b) includes the following components or accessories that can be fitted to, or adapted to fit, a firearm or restricted weapon:
(i) grips:
(ii) frames:
(iii) chassis systems:
(iv) magazine adapters:
(v) magazine couplers:
(vi) magazine loaders:
(vii) flash suppressors:
(viii) silencers:
(ix) folding or telescoping stocks; but
(c) does not include the following:
(i) pistol carbine conversion kits:
(ii) air pistol carbine conversion kits
