    Permits to acquire for scopes?

    Hi all,

Are we still requiring a permit to acquire when importing a scope now?

    Cheers

If you are trying to get any scope that is vaguely high end tactical out of aussie, just be warned that there is a possibility of been finned and having the optic destroyed.
This is fact not fiction as it happened just before lockdown last year.
It was a nf shv so not even remotely tactical.
It put me off thats for sure!

An Australian export permit has been required for years.
Most people probably just get lucky importing/exporting scopes without the correct paperwork.

No permit required. Recently had one arrive and asked the arms office prior who confirmed no paperwork needed.

This is the answer I got when I asked the question last year -

    Good afternoon,

    Thank you for your email.

With the recent change to the Arms Act 1983, this item you are seeking to import is not considered a part, therefore there is no longer a lawful requirement for a permit to import to be obtained.

    Kind regards

Does this mean "Why buy one there if you can buy one here for more?"
Just going to take a look around the next bend...

Can anyone confirm whether the same applies to scope mounts/rings? It is difficult to find clear information as the relevant section in the Arms Act is rather vague.
