shit if I had a 24" 270 barrel I would be a happy chappie...... old girl was 20" and newbie is 22" always thought if rebarreling would go 27 just for shits n giggles, would possibly negate need for suppressor to some degree,or could go DPT with less baffles as would be heap quieter anyway....in theory more powder would be burned inside barrel
Accuracy can improve - with less barrel whip and different harmonics - or something. Ive never had a deterioration in accuracy shortening any barrel.
Sometimes I've needed to move to a faster burning/higher energy powder and/or drop a bullet weight to reclaim lost velocity.
I had a 20" 270 that easily did 3k with 130 grn and N560 powder. Howa with a Boyds thumbhole stock. Fluted barrel. I thought it was too heavy. Someone in ChCh bought it for a song.
Makes sense, I was more getting at would the same load be as accurate in an 18" barrel as it is in a 24" barrel granted it would likely be 150fps slower.
Or are you guys having to start all over again with load development ?
Again just curious I am in no way considering chopping 5" off my barrel :P
Got a rossi wizard 270 s/s 19" barrel being single shot its far shorter than anything else (no action length) blew up and under rated suppressor and baught a cheap Hardy for it shoots amazing being short freehand and can be a bit of a pain to shoot lying down off the bipod use a droptine 3x9 and have it zeroed at 300 on the 300yrd pin shoots moa still and everything gets shot in the neck out to 200 its no magnum but it gets used more than my 7mm rem mag and my 3030 marlin suppressed due to being so versatile
This I'm told this is the NZ Hunter 270 load:
Norma brass
Fed 210 primer
Hodgdon Superformance
57-58gr
145eldx 2900-2950fps
18” barrel
DPT Mk2
There are a few threads on here extolling the virtues of the Superformance/ELDX combo. I'm running the powder with 150g LRABs at around 2800fps in a 20 inch Tikka with Gunworks suppressor. Could probably run a bit quicker, but works fine for me as is.
Getting similar results in browning a-bolt, 22" with hardy compact:
145gr eldx Precision Hunter 2820fps but accurate - 3/4" which is good for this rifle
145gr eldx Handload with 56gr Superperformance, 2930 fps, 3/4" again - mild load but lost accuracy at higher loads
