Posting Firearms?

I've just scored a new to me rifle located at the other end of the country. The good news is, I have a long time friend who lives down there, and he's already picked it up and put it in his safe.

From what I can find online, the police guidance (without actually reading the act) says that the sender must verify that the receiver has a valid FAL either in person or by mail order form.

My friend has verified I have a valid FAL (face to face). Can he just post it to me and ignore the ballache of the police forms?

Think you'll find that the few Couriers that take firearms, Toll and Aramex are 2 of them want the Police Mail Order form completed. NZ Post won't cart them if they know what's on board.

Firearms can only be sent dealer to dealer and the police paperwork is not negotiable, don't be that guy that loses a fire arm and has no legs to stand on due to trying to get around the rules.
The media would have a field day, not to mention your "fit and proper" status would likely be very quickly re evaluated if it was found to have been sent without proper documentation etc.
Not to mention if it fell in to the wrong hands the ramifications are well known.
Do the paperwork, pay the money to send it via the dealer network fully insured and above board. Cover your arse !

Where do you get that information from? It's not what the law says, or even what the police guidance says... I'm not trying to be a dick, and I think you're right in that it's best to err on the side of caution, but my interpretation of what I've read is far from that black and white

The courier not taking the firearm is a company decision, not police. The dealer network is how that issue is got around. You will need a Police mail order permit signed by a member of police. Print it off fill in the details, take it to a Police Station with your firearm license and they will have it sent to your mate's email address.
How does your mate know you didn`t have your license revoked yesterday?

The method of delivery is not specified in law, and 'common carriers' are exempt from licencing provisions for delivery purposes. Toll and Aramex both handle firearms but will not deliver to home addresses, just to previously arranged dealers, or depot collection. The method of purchasing by internet/mail order is spelled out in the legislation but it is quite lawful to have the gun delivered by another licenced person. NZ Post are totally paranoid regarding any firearm related item, including parts and accessories. Courier Post used to be the preferred method of delivery, even by Police, but some woofter high up in NZ Post prefers 'virtue signalling' to providing a decent service!

Mainfreight still take them without paperwork although some branches are dicks and refuse (Invercargill branch is good,only the sending depot needs to know whats inside) . They charge an arm and a leg for casual and it must be depot to depot.

the last couple of rifles i had couriered were through aramex, to a local hunting store( seems anyone but hunting and fishing, they've never help with a delivery). go ask your local if they'll receive your package, then get your mate to send it there. paperwork is easy sign scan they send it to the other end and you're sorted.

I never cease to be amazed than lots of people will spend small fortunes buying a new gun somewhere away from them then scrimp and scrry around trying to save 50 bucks on delivery.
Trusting people they have never met to pick up and deliver etc.

If the delivery costs are an issue then I would go out on a limb and say you couldn't afford it in the first place.

The dealer - dealer network works, is reliable and does not cost that much.

If you are spending over a grand on a gun whats another 50 or 60 bucks or even a hundy to have it delivered to you safe and sound

Not sure as usually you deal with the buyer or seller so enter their details on the police form as well as the serial no calibre, brand etc. Then get the sell er to drop off at a gunship costs around $50-$60 to send pick up at nominated recieving dealer ( let them know beforehand just common courtesy) no hassle usually done in about a week or so.

Good words @mikee My local dealer charge a flat rate of $55.00 to send & $30.00 to receive. Go the dealer to dealer way with your S43A and be done with.

The difference for me is that I am always buying cheapy budget jobbies. if you pay a couple of hundy or less on a bargain then another 50 bucks makes it not so bargainy.
On a new one, I wouldn't mind at all.
Another thing I hate is the process in Christchurch. I have several easy to get to police stations but no, I have to head right into CHCH to do it. Just annoying
