With lockdown going to level 3 here some of the gunshops opened with click and collect. Greg at Custom Guns was the "first door open" so I decided to reward that and buy a new rifle with the wage subsidy money our dear leaders dish out. Gotta spend it to make it go round.

I looked at 3 rifles under $1000 - a Ruger American Rimfire Std, Ruger American Target and a CZ 457 Std model. I left the shop with the RAR std, but by the time I'd got home I had buyers remorse . . . went back, paid some more $$ and left with the Ruger Armerican Rimfire Target.

The RART was the best finished and smoothest of the lot. Its very nicely balanced with a just right barrel weight and length. Borrowed a 1/2x28 suppressor off @Kiwi-Hunter .

Chucked on an old 4-16 AO scope and started shooting. Results at first weren't all that great, but after a bit of research I'd polished the firing mechanism parts (which are simple and very nicely designed on this rifle) and figured that action screw tension was going to be critical with the way this rifle is bedded (its usually pretty important on any 22).

After about 200 rounds "sent" I was starting to get a feel for it and its initial vertical stringing habit was coming under control.

Here it is in its current setup . .

And this is the sort of results its producing with the sorts of ammo I go to once I feel a rifle is starting to "shoot"

Ammo "codes" are ES= Eley subsonic HP white box (this particular lot is the Fiocchi labed stuff), EM- Eley Match, EC = Eley Club, RWS RT = RWS Target Rifle, RWS PM = RWS Pistol Match, and S&B is Sellier and Bellot Subsonic HP.

The S& B was a revelation, I don't recall a "hunting ammo" that will give better 10 shot groups than "match ammo" (yes CCI will shoot the occasional small group, but you very seldom see 10 and 50 shot strings without several fliers)

So I took a wee break and shot the 5x5x50 test and here are the "informal" results, no doubt @rambo6mmrem will have an official score up soon on the other thread.

For you @Tentman - and other Norinco EM332 owners... Yes the rumours are true - they can shoot beautifully esp at longer range.

I don't shoot competitions any more - haven't for ages - and I don't bother shooting 100m targets with 22s. However, from time to time when shooting in wee hunter 22s at 50m or 75m, I'll wander down and put up a few dots on the backing paper at 100m to check accuracy and bullet drop. Can't access my target data from photobucket now but found this target scrap from back of the drawer of my wee Norinco EM332 shooting consecutive set of sub 1" groups at 100m:

Found three such scraps - all with consecutive groups averaging under inch at 100m with best average of 0.6". Superbly accurate wee rifle at 100 with PMC Match (black packet), Aguila Superextra HV, and Winchester Expert Target. The one hole group is a cherry-picked one from 50m - it would pop these occasionally - but more common average was 0-3-0.4". This wee Norinco cost me $247 then, and was tested with its stock Kilwell Huntsman 3-9x40. Kick myself now - wish I'd put a good 4-16 on it to get precision results at 100m - though they may not have been better.

Its 100m shooting would easily beat most expensive 22s. A wee challenge for the rimfire guys when you're next out at the range. Pop four consecutive groups down at 100m, all under 1 inch, and beat the Em332's 0.69" average. $247

Tried a few groups at 100m

Really likes Eley match but CCI standard goes pretty well to. bloody happy with under MOA at 100m for a pea shooter

Here's my two with the latest acquisition in front.

Back: Tikka T1x, 20" barrel, DPT suppressor, KRG Bravo chassis. Vortex Crossfire II 6-24x50 scope.

Front: Ruger 10/22 with KIDD 2 stage trigger, KIDD fluted bull barrel and MDT LSS chassis. EOtech 512 holographic weapon sight.

Below are some groups at 50m with the T1x. I took out the 10/22 for a shoot today and it was fairly promising, but the optic I have on it is for fun and not precision. It wouldn't be fair to show groups for that one just yet!

@Rush my suggestion would be to buy the cheapest 10/22 you can find for the red dot
The kidd is a sub moa rifle and the red dot just won’t let it do what it’s Designed to do
Put a big target style scope on that kidd it really Deserves it
    Obviously that’s my opinion only

I've been recently tempted by the Tippmann M4-22. I think the EOTech would go well on one of those. I aim to get a scope with decent magnification and side focus/adjustable objective on the Kidd.

You may want to order the replacement trigger spring as they are a tad heavy from the factory ( you would think that for the extra $20 that they cost that they would be shipped with one)
I’ve just fitted a 5-25x50 on mine to be able to shoot it out to 2&300m
I have an Anschutz 1712 with a VX36.5-20 and I have just taken delivery today of a Lithgow LA101 .22.....looking forward to playing with it hopefully this weekend.

My LA101 is stuck in Auckland lockdown . . . and i also was fortunate enough to be offered a Remington 541T but I can't take possession of that for a while yet either, I have great hopes of staying on the leaderboard of the "25 years old" class with it

great thread - really keen to practice a lot more 22lr shooting - will be setting up a bit more of a formal private range at home in the near future. Currently shooting a pretty basic 10/22 sporter delux model, only upgrades are a BX trigger, DPT suppressor and a pretty basic Bushnell 1.5-4.5 scope which i'll look to replace.
Have been keen on an RPR as I have it's big brother tucked in my safe...
